Sports Shorts Genna Opatut, a freshman at Emerson College in Boston, was named the Great Northeast Athletic Conference's Rookie of the Week on consecutive weeks. The Freehold Borough High School grad scored the game-winning goal in Emerson's GNAC 1- 0 win over UMass, Boston, and had four goals for the week, the first time she was the Rookie of the Week. Opatut had the game-winning goal in two Emerson victories, the second time she was site. She scored both goals in a 2-1 win over Lasell College, Mass., and the only goal of the game in the Lions' 1-0 win over UMass Dartmouth. At Freehold Borough, Opatut was a member of the Colonial teams that won back-to-back NJSIAA Group III state championships in 2006 and 2007. Marlboro's Stefanie Haar was named the New Jersey Athletic Conference's Women's Tennis Player of the Year. The junior topped the All-NJAC Singles Team and, was picked to the doubles team as well with teammate Felice Trinh. Haar, a junior, was 5-0 in NJAC play at first singles and was 7-3 overall. With Trinh, she was 5-0 in doubles matches and 9-2 overall. For her career, Haar, a graduate of Marlboro High School, is 94-32 at TCNJ. She was All-NJAC last year. The last chance to sign up for the Jewish Community Center of Western Monmouth County's Basketball League is Sunday at the Manalapan-Englishtown Middle School from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The season begins on Dec. 7. All games are played on Sundays and run through March. The league is for grades three through 12. Central Jersey Hawks AAU girls basketball team will he holding four age group tryouts at Rebounds in Neptune on Dec. 6 and 7. On Dec. 6 from 3-5 p.m. and Dec. 7 from 2-4 p.m., tryouts will be held for U10 (fifth grade) and U11 (sixth grade). The Manalapan Flamethrowers U11 travel baseball team clinched first place recently with a 9-0 record during the fall season in the USABL National East 50/70 Division. As the team worked through changes and injuries this past season they continued to get the job done, with the team consisting of the following players. Thomas Malik, Kyle Glickson, Jordan Gonzalez, Jake Kupfer, Will Meany, Nick Sigismondi, Steven Knable, Kevin Tress, Marc Goldstein and Christian DeVito.
