Sports Shorts Brad Emmons, who plays tight end for the Delaware Valley College football team, caught a touchdown pass in the club's 34- 19 victory over King's College last weekend. The senior hauled in a four-yard touchdown reception from quarterback Mike Isgro in the Aggies' Middle Atlantic Conference opener. Emmons, a Colts Neck High School graduate, has caught four passes on the season for 35 yards. Two of those receptions have been for touchdowns. Delaware Valley has gotten off to a 3-1 start and is ranked 13th in the nation in Division III. In recent N.J. Suburban Youth Football League action, the Marlboro Youth Football Mustangs played the Parsippany Panthers. The E team (third/fourth grade) lost 21- 7, the D team (fifth grade) fell 28-14, and the A team (eight grade) was on the short side of a 37-12 score. The C team (sixth grade) played to a 13- 13 tie with the Panthers. The B team lost a defensive battle, 6-0. The B and C teams remain in the playoff hunt. The Marlboro Youth Football Mustangs play their home games at Marlboro High School. Swift Kid extended his winning streak to six with a win in the $35,000 New Jersey Sire Stakes- Green Acres Final for 3-year-old trotting colts and geldings at Freehold Raceway. Driven by Freehold's Jack Baggitt Jr., the son of Yankee Glice scored a career-best 1:59.3. Swift Kid was last beaten to the wire on Aug. 5. He has earned more than $56,000 this year with seven wins, three seconds and three thirds in 16 starts. Katie's Kiss ran her winning streak to three with her win in the $35,000 NJSS-Green Acres final for 3-year-old trotting fillies. Jeff Gregory drove the daughter of Muscles Yankee to a wire-to-wire victory. She has five wins, four seconds and two thirds in her 16 starts this year and has been in the money in 15 of her 27 career starts. Her career earnings are just under $100,000 ($99,886). Dr. Josh Epstein of the Brace Place in Manalapan will be running in the New York City Marathon on Nov. 2. He is running as part of the NYRR Foundation Team for Kids. Through charitable donations, the team will be able to assist 50,000 kids in joining Running Partners, a youth development program that serves children who have little or no access to structured physical education. Dr. Epstein is committed to raising $12,000 to help inner-city children learn about good health and fitness habits. The goal is for these children to become physically fit, learn about proper diet and exercise, and the direct relationship of effort to achievement. In addition, they will participate in races and special events that will expose them to new experiences and motivate them to set goals for their adult lives. Howell's Kyle Bethel is the second leading scorer on the Duke University men's soccer team. The freshman forward/ midfielder has four goals (one a gamewinner) and two assists for the Blue Devils, who are 6-5-1 overall. Bethel is a graduate of Howell High School where he was a two-time all-state pick. Last fall, he led the Rebels to their first-ever Shore Conference Tournament championship as well as a second straight Shore Conference A North Division crown. He scored 43 goal and had 43 assists during his stellar scholastic career. Galaxy Gymnastics (Howell) had three girls from its Level 7 team qualify for the state championships. The team competed in the State Sectional Championships held at Head Over Heels in Middletown. The qualifying girls were Bayleigh Fobes, Celine Rabo and Alyssa Leitner. Fobes won the all-around and balance beam in the 12+ age division. She was fourth on the vault and uneven bars. Leitner also competed in the 12+ division. Rabo participated in the 11-year-old group and was fifth on the floor. Kristyn Sheridan and Jennifer Fobes coach the Galaxy team. The Jackson Renegades 10-U Girls Fastpitch Softball team is looking for a few players to round out its 2009 travel team. Harness driver George Brennan returned to the sulky on Oct. 13 at Freehold Raceway for his first races since he broke his wrist at the end of May. He drove seven races on the card and picked up his 5,410th career victory in the eighth race with Shayna Baby. Brennan suffered a compound fracture of his right wrist in a racing accident on May 31 at Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs. Two surgeries were required to repair damage. Before the accident, he had won 151 races in '08 and nearly $3.3 million in purses. Karen Fagliarone of Freehold has been named the racing secretary at Freehold Raceway effective Oct. 28. Fagliarone, 47, is one of a very small number of women to occupy this position at a North American track. She has been a member of the racing staff at Freehold for nearly two decades. Fagliarone replaced Peter J. Koch, who has accepted the director/racing secretary position at the Meadowlands. "I've worked at Freehold since 1979," said Fagliarone. "I started in the Racing Commission Office when I was 17, then moved to publicity and the race office when Frank Ferrone was racing secretary, When Pete (Koch) came her eight years ago, I became his assistant." Fagliarone comes from a racing family. Her late father, Jim McGovern, drove and trained horses. Her husband, Michael Fagliarone, was a driver-trainer himself but is currently the track superintendent at Freehold Raceway. |
