Foundation honors students

COLTS NECK - The Colts Neck Education Foundation recently recognized several students in the community.

According to a press release from the foundation, Allison Doughty and Kathlyn Herrick are two young ladies who left their mark at Colts Neck High School. Each was a member of the National Honor Society, the Spanish Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta Society and held Student Council leadership roles. They were each winners of $1,000 scholarships.

Allison, ranked fourth in her class, was in the Global Languages and Cultures Learning Center. She participated in a Spanish Immersion Camp at Millersville University, instruction in learning Chinese language (Mandarin) and was a teaching assistant for the Freehold Borough schools' summer program for students requiring bilingual services. She also enjoyed dancing, drama and chorus. In her spare time, she volunteered for Leo's Club events as well as dog walking for the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. She will attend Emory University.

Many people have read a monthly article titled "Cougar News" written by Kathlyn. She has also participated in the Math and Science League, soccer, winter track and spring track all four years. She has been a four-year participant in the Douglass Science Institute.

As a sophomore she was elected to Who's Who Among American High School Students. During her junior year she spent 240 hours in the New Jersey Governor's School of the Sciences. During her senior year she was awarded a Star- Ledger Scholar, Edward J. Bloustein Distinguished Scholar, and Dr. Norman Field Student Achiever. Kathlyn, No. 1 in her class, will attend the University of Pennsylvania.

According to the foundation, the Cedar Drive School had three young men who each received a $200 savings bond. Joseph Amato was awarded because of his academic achievement; Joey Caracappa participated in fine and performing arts activities; and Conall McNelis exhibited student leadership qualities.
