Writer questions raise presented to former FRHSD administrator In the minutes of Nov. 19, 2007 - less than two months from his retirement - I noticed that Mr. Tanzini advanced on the school district's salary guide with the recommendation of district superintendent, Dr. James Wasser. This recommendation was made for Mr. Tanzini having earned his doctorate degree. This recognition, according to the minutes, would elevate Mr. Tanzini's salary from $167,840 to $170,340. Since it appeared unusual to receive a pay raise just six weeks from retirement, I submitted an open public records access request for a copy of Mr. Tanzini's degree, school of study and any other documentation submitted by him to the FRHSD, enabling him to advance on the salary guide. Needless to say, I did not receive the copies of information requested. I received a one-paragraph statement indicating Mr. Tanzini earned a doctorate degree from Breyer State University-Alabama. Researching Alabama state schools - where this school is allegedly located - indicates it is not a state school. Further investigation also reveals that this "university" is also not accredited by an accreditation agency approved by the U.S. Department of Education. This school has been described by The New Republic magazine, as a "diploma mill." Based on this information, I am requesting the attorney general and the state Department of Education to conduct an investigation on past and present practices conducted by the Freehold Regional High School District, and its awarding of pay raises and/or promotions to those employees with bogus, unaccredited college degrees. In closing, the submission of illegitimate degrees by certain employees undermines the integrity and hard work of those dedicated employees who legitimately earn their degrees.
I recommend that the Freehold Regional High School District Board of Education provide information and counseling to its employees on the many ways and places where legitimate and worthwhile course credits may be obtained with which to achieve raises and/or promotions. |
