Spring Valley is expected to be repaved
BY REBECCA MORTON Staff Writer

MARLBORO - People who drive on Spring Valley Road can finally look forward to improved conditions on the street, which has been in a state of disrepair following the installation of a gas main in the road by New Jersey Natural Gas (NJNG) in 2007.

Spring Valley Road runs between Tennent Road and Route 18 in the Morganville section of Marlboro. The section to be repaved stretches from Tennent Road in Marlboro to the border of Marlboro and Old Bridge.

According to a letter fromMarlboro Director of Public Works Bob DiMarco to Business Administrator Alayne Shepler, temporary trench restoration and blacktop repairs made by the gas company left the road in a dangerous condition for motorists.

The DPW and the Marlboro Police Department believed that immediate action needed to be taken on the road, according to DiMarco's letter.

Shepler explained that the utility company, in this case NJNG, is only required to pave the portion of the road on which it performed work.

Since it was in the best interests of the township to have the entire stretch of Spring Valley between Tennent Road and the Old Bridge border improved, municipal officials worked out an agreement with NJNG which states that while the utility is paving its portion of the road, it will also pave the remainder of that stretch as long as Marlboro supplies the asphalt.

At the April 24 meeting of the Township Council, the members of the governing body approved a change order, extending an existing contract between Marlboro and Trap Rock Industries to maintain the 2007 contract price of $43.25 per ton of paving asphalt. A comparison quote of $49 per ton was received from Stavola Companies, showing the prior contract rate to be a better value.

According to the resolution, about 4,000 tons of material will be required to complete the project.

Shepler said there is no exact date for the paving work to begin, but said officials expect the work to begin soon.
