Park surrounding battlefield deserves to remain open
The Battleground Historical Society was organized 39 years ago. One of its many achievements was in saving a 1723 former tavern from destruction in the borough of Englishtown. The importance of saving this tavern was because it was on the pathway that the Continental troops took on their march to fight Gen. Clinton's British Army.

Forty-five years ago the state started purchasing the land which totals 1,818 acres on which the battle took place. This was accomplished by June 1977 and was opened to the public for the re-enactment of the Battle of Monmouth in June 1978.

Every year since its creation this re-enactment has taken place near the date of June 28. Our Battleground Historical Society of 96 members strongly urges the saving of Monmouth Battlefield State Park. The surrounding community, the youths of the area and the historical significance of this battle for independence would be greatly deprived if this park were to be closed.
