Councilman wants seniors to have info on tax freeze BY REBECCA MORTON Staff Writer
MARLBORO - Councilman Frank LaRocca and tax collector Shirley Giaquinto are meeting with senior citizens to answer questions they may have about property taxes.
LaRocca said he and Giaquinto will meet with residents of the Marlboro Greens and Greenbriar adult communities. Seniors who do not live in aMarlboro adult community will have a chance to meet with LaRocca and Giaquinto in Town Hall.
The officials will be providing seniors with information and help concerning New Jersey's Property Tax Reimbursement, also known as the senior tax freeze.
According to the New Jersey Division of Taxation's Internet Web site, the program reimburses eligible senior citizens and disabled persons for property tax increases. The amount of the reimbursement is the difference between the amount of property taxes that were due and paid in the "base year," the year the individual met all of the eligibility requirements, and the amount of property taxes due and paid in the current year.
Among the requirements to be eligible for the tax freeze include being more than 65 years of age or if a person is receiving federal Social Security disability benefits. The person filing for the reimbursement must also have lived continuously in New Jersey for at least the last 10 years, as a homeowner or a renter.
LaRocca said he decided to meet with seniors about the property tax issue after hearing the concerns of residents who attended a special municipal meeting at Greenbriar on April 9. Some residents expressed their dismay at the current tax situation and some people were unaware of the possibility of reimbursement, he said.
A meeting was held on May 6 at the Greenbriar adult community. A meeting will be held on May 12 at the Marlboro Greens adult community from 9-10 a.m.
Also on May 12, a meeting will be held at Town Hall from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. That meeting is for Marlboro seniors who are not residents of Greenbriar or Marlboro Greens.
