History students advance to next level

MANALAPAN- Pupils from the Manalapan EnglishtownMiddle School recently participated in the Southern Regional Division of the New Jersey National History Day Competition at Rider University. The theme of the competition was "Conflict and Compromise in American History."

The students were mentored by teachers Shannon Maida and Jackie Colon, and Bruce Mitzak, supervisor of social studies.

The following students qualified to advance to the next round of competition,May 3 at William Paterson University, where they will compete with winners of the Northern Regional Division competition:

•Hannah Bogolub, "Sayanora Freedom: Manzanar's Conflict of Japanese Internment."

• Aaron Breslin, "In the Shadow of World Destroyed: Memories of an Expelled Teenager."

• Brian Burstyn, "Topaz Relocation Center: The Jewel of the Desert."

• Vineel Chakradhar, "Religious Conflict Leading to the Indian Partition."

• Veronica Pereira, "Prisoners of the Mill: Lowell Mill Girls."

• Emily Radman, "War of the Worlds Broadcast."

• Eric Sauer, "Conflicts and Compromises of the U.S. Biological Warfare Program, 1940-1969."

• Savon Thomas, "The Draft Riots of New York: A Conflict Between Irish Americans, African Americans and the United States Government."
