Outstanding students honored by FRHSD

Six students in the Freehold Regional High School District have manifested the true meaning of academic excellence and civic responsibility through their work.

School administrators in Monmouth County were asked to nominate one student from each high school to participate in the 28th annual Dr. Norman Field Student Recognition Day Program to be held at Marlboro High School on April 3 at 7 p.m.

The FRHSD student achievers were recognized at a recent meeting of the district's Board of Education. The honored students are Kathlyn Herrick of Colts Neck High School, Rethamburra Ramachundrin of Freehold High School, Alanna Autler of Freehold Township High School, Mary Thomas-Ridgway of Howell High School, Adam Rice of Manalapan High School, and Anisha Atluri of Marlboro High School.

Kathlyn Herrick holds a 5.18 gradepoint average, and in addition to her academic

achievements she is also engaged in a multitude of extracurricular activities, including the National Honor Society, the Spanish National Honor Society, the Douglass Science Institute and the New Jersey Governor's School for Sciences.

Kathlyn was a member of the Colts Neck varsity soccer team and captained the Cougars' winter track squad. She is hoping to attend Stanford University in the fall.

Rethamburra Ramachundrin is a student in the FRHSD Medical Sciences Learning Center who plans on pursuing an M.D. and Ph.D. program and a career in medical research.

Rethamburra participates in Columbia University's Science Honors Program, volunteers at the Cancer Institute of New Jersey, assists with the recording of books onto CDs for people who are blind or dyslexic, and in her spare time she watches foreign films and knits.

AlannaAutler was praised by Freehold Township Principal Elizabeth Higley. who said the student "thrives on challenges and flourishes in the most demanding of environments. … In the two years I have known Alanna, I have never witnessed any effort that has fallen short ofAlanna's best."

Alanna is enrolled in the FRHSD International Studies Learning Center and holds a 4.85 grade-point average. She participates in the Governor's School for the Arts, is the executive president of the FTHS Student Government, president of the forensics team, and a four-year member of the marching and concert band. Alanna is planning to attend Northwestern University.

Howell Principal Zina Duerbig praised her school's student achiever, saying, "Mary Thomas-Ridgway excels both in and out of the classroom and moreover is someone who epitomizes the qualities that Dr. Field recognized as an exemplary student."

Mary is the editor in chief of Howell's school newspaper, the Accent; a member of the National Honor Society and the Spanish National Honor Society; and a Distinguished Rebel Scholar. She is an Edward J. Bloustein Distinguished Scholar and was awarded the United States Achievement Academy Award for her outstanding potential in the area of mathematics.

Mary hopes to attend Princeton University to study archaeology and anthropology.

Adam Rice of Manalapan High School also has a long list of accomplishments and accolades. He is the student council president, a member of the National Honor Society, a member of the Spanish National Honor Society and a co-captain of the Braves' varsity soccer team.

Adam has worked as an intern with Congressman Rush Holt, was a Landmark Volunteer at Olympic National Park for two weeks and participated in the Lead America Congressional Student Leadership Conference in Washington, D.C., according to information provided by the FRHSD.Adam will be attending Dartmouth College in the fall.

Marlboro High School's student achiever of the year is Anisha Atluri.

According to information provided by the FRHSD, "During her four years at Marlboro High School, Anisha has been a student council homeroom representative, a member of the Mustangs soccer team, a two-time captain of the varsity lacrosse team, a member of the debate club, science league (where she placed in the top 10 percent of the state), math league, the Federal Reserve Challenge and the Consumer Bowl Team Challenge.

Anisha has gained early acceptance and will be attending the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania.
