Cut in state aid will result in fewer services
By now we have all heard that Gov. Corzine announced substantial cuts in state aid to all municipalities in New Jersey. It has become clear that the state is trying to dig out of its financial hole by transferring part of the burden to municipalities.

For Freehold Township, this equates to a reduction in aid of over $1 million in 2008. Aid, by the way, comes from our tax dollars to the state.

Freehold Township has had a low municipal tax rate for decades, while providing outstanding municipal services, making the township a great place to live.

Unfortunately, under the governor's plan, the township will have no choice but to reduce municipal services that our residents are accustomed to and that add to the quality of life for our residents.

Freehold Township has done "more with less" for many years. The governor now proposes we do "less with less." As the mayor of Freehold Township, I find this upsetting and unfair.

For years, we have run Freehold Township as a busi ness, effectively and efficiently, and our reward is a massive reduction in state funding.

I hope that the voices of all municipalities will be heard in Trenton, expressing their disapproval of the proposed cuts.

The residents of well run municipalities, like Freehold Township, should not pay for the mistakes of the not-run-so-well state.

Eugene B. Golub

Mayor Freehold Township
