Pinewood Derby winners announced FREEHOLD TOWNSHIP - Fifteen Freehold Township boys have been named winners in the 2008 Pinewood Derby Race sponsored by Cub Scout Pack 155 of Freehold. In order to participate, each Cub Scout had to design, cut, sand, build and paint a race car weighing no more than 5 ounces from a 7-inch block of soft pinewood. Eighty-six Cub Scouts, in first through fifth grade, participated in this year's derby held in January, according to a press release. The cars were raced down a 50-foot aluminum track in multiple heats to determine the top three fastest cars in the Tiger (first grade), Wolf (second grade), Bear (third grade), Webelos I (fourth grade) and Webelos II (fifth grade) divisions. The top cars then raced in the grand finale to determine the 2008 Pack 155 overall winners. All participants received ribbons and division winners received place trophies. The first-place Pack 155 division winners will pit their cars against the best Scout cars in Monmouth County during the Battleground District Pinewood Derby on April 5 at Freehold Raceway Mall. Pack 155 overall winners are Kevin Hobbs, first place, Daniel Crowley, second place, and Anthony Picciano, third place. Pack 155 division winners are: Tiger: Anthony Atkinson, first place; Zachary LaCanna, second place; and Devin Licsko, third place. Wolf: Daniel Crowley, first place; Alec Bierman, second place; and Michael Galanaugh, third place. Bear: Matthew Simpson, first place; Andrew DePass, second place; and Vincent Alessi, third place. Webelos I: Kevin Hobbs, first place; Kevin Sweetnam, second place; and Anthony Picciano, third place. Webelos II: Nicholas Davenport, first place; Kyle Martin, second place; and Sean Cornell, third place. Cub Scout Pack 155 of Freehold is a nonprofit organization that serves more than 80 elementary school boys in the Freehold area. |
