Sports Shorts Friday's 101st Millrose Games keeps adding the stars, asworld shot put champion Reese Hoffa returns to New York's Madison SquareGarden,where hewill defend his title against world silver medalistAdamNelson. Stacy Dragila, the 2000 Olympic champion in the women's pole vault, will compete against the woman who replaced her as the American record holder, Jenn Stuczynski. The highlight event is the Wanamaker Mile, featuring defending champion Bernard Lagat, who will go after his sixth crown, againstAustralia's CraigMottram, the man who pushed him to the line last year, has added two of the promising upand coming runners. Joining the field are America's Galen Rupp, the NCAA 10,000- meter record holder, who is looking to break 4:00 for the first time, and New Zealand's Nick Willis, the 2006 Commonwealth Games 1,500-meter gold medalist. TheMillrose Games are the third stop in the USA Track and Field Visa Championships. Tickets are on sale at Ticketmaster outlets or online or at the Garden box office. The Cyclones boys gymnastics team from the Monmouth Gymnastics Academy won the Level 7 Class IV team championship at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. In the 11-year-old age group, Michael Egna was sixth in the all-around, second on the vault, fourth on parallel bars and fifth on the high bar.Mikael Khachatryan was second on the high bars and third on the rings, and Joseph Luca was second on the p-bars. Matthew Mannino was first in the allaround in Level 7 age 12 and up. He was also first on the rings, p-bars and high bar, second on the floor, fourth on the pommel horse, and fifth on the vault. The MGA's Level 6 Class V team captured third place. They were led in the 11- year-old age group by Christopher Graff, who won the all-around and was first on the floor and vault, second on the horse, pbars and high bar, and eighth on rings. In the ages 8-9 division, T.J. Orrico was seventh in the AA. He took second on the high bar, third on the vault, fifth on the rings and ninth on the p-bars. Parker Adamo was eighth in the AA, taking seventh on the horse, vault, and high bar, and ninth on the p-bars. Daniel Mizrach was sixth on the floor and vault, and Michael Luca was 13th on the vault. In Level 10 Class I ages 16-18, Ikaika Jakub was eighth on the rings for MGA. In Level V Class VI competition, Kirill Yefremenko was eighth on the p-bars. Yuri Aminov coaches the Cyclones. Marlboro Youth Football will hold in-person registration for spring NFLFlag Football tomorrow from 6:30-9:30 p.m. at the Marlboro Recreation Center on Wyncrest Road. Interested players can also register online at any time at www.marlboroyouthfootball. com. NFLflag football is noncontact. Boys and girls ages 5-14 from all towns are eligible to play. Games will start around March 29. Registration is $76 per player and each player receives an official NFLflag football jersey to keep. Freehold Township Parks and Recreation's Girls Softball Leagues will hold spring softball 2008 registration beginning Friday at theMichael TigheActivity Center, 65 Georgia Road. Friday's registration will be held 7-9 p.m. Other dates are Sunday, 9 a.m. to noon; Feb. 29, 7-9 p.m.; and March 1, 9 a.m. to noon. Age groups are second through fourth grade, fifth and sixth grade, seventh through ninth grades, and ninth through 12th grade. All skill levels are welcomed to join the program. Registration fees are $65 for residents of Freehold Township and $90 for nonresidents. |
