Rotary donates funding for bicycle racks

FREEHOLD - The Executive Board of the Freehold Rotary Club recently announced the donation of $2,000 to Freehold Borough for the purchase and installation of bicycle racks in the area around the downtown bus station. The bicycle racks are intended to complement the architectural design of the historic downtown area.

"There has been an increase in bicycle traffic in the downtown area and a corresponding lack of bicycle racks," said Frank Argote-Freyre, president of the Freehold Rotary Club. "As a result, the bicycles are sometimes chained haphazardly in various locations around the borough. We hope this donation will help with the purchase of bicycle racks that are in keeping with plans to improve the area around the bus station."

"It is part of our club's mission to make a contribution to our community and we believe this is a wise investment in the future of Freehold Borough," Argote-Freyre said.

In a Nov. 26 memorandum, Freehold Borough officials indicated they were interested in receiving funds for bicycle safety programs in the borough. The Rotary Club's donation is in response to that memorandum, according to a press release.

The check will be given to a borough official at an upcoming Rotary Club meeting. The club meets at 12:15 p.m. every Tuesday at Basile's on Park Avenue in Freehold.
