Marlboro board updates policies; accepts donations
BY REBECCA MORTON Staff Writer

MARLBORO - Three Marlboro K-8 School District policies were updated at the Board of Education's meeting on Dec. 18. The updates were done to comply with new legislation, according to Sharon Witchel, the district's public information officer.

The policies receiving the updates were those concerning Married/Pregnant Pupils, Equal Educational Opportunity and Non-Discrimination/Affirmative Action.

Witchel explained that the updates were changes in wording to align with state standards. These policy updates had previously been discussed by board members.

In other news at the meeting it was announced that theMarlboroMemorialMiddle School Chess Team for eighth-graders won the New Jersey K-12 Grade Championship on Nov. 18 at Brookdale Community College, Lincroft. The group won the team event for eighth-graders. Two students won second-place and third-place honors as individuals.

In addition, another eighth-grade pupil won the 2007 United States National Youth Chess Championship (K-9) for Junior High School in St. Louis, Mo., that same weekend in November.

The Marlboro Educational Foundation donated an additional $11,308 in grants on top of the $44,087 that was donated at a previous board meeting. Programs that will be offered with these latest grants include a weather station at the Marlboro Memorial Middle School and Marlboro Storytellers at the Marlboro Middle School.

The board accepted a donation from members of the Frank J. Dugan Elementary School PTA in the amount of $7,399. The money was donated to the school for the purchase of new stage curtains.

Three of the district's veteran employees will be retiring at the end of the 2007- 08 school year. Joan Ginsberg, a social studies teacher at the Marlboro Middle School, will retire after 311/2 years of service. After 25 years with the district, Elizabeth Musillo, a teacher at the Dugan School, will retire from her position. Anne Latona, the nurse at the Marlboro Middle School, will retire after 32 years of service.

The board members expressed their appreciation and gratitude for the employees' faithful service to the children and to the district. The three women were wished good health and happiness during their retirement.

The board will hold a workshop meeting on Jan. 8 and a regular meeting on Jan. 22. The meetings are open to the public and are held at the school district's administrative offices on Township Drive.
