Driver who struck Manalapan resident enters no-contest plea The driver of the sport utility vehicle who struck Manalapan resident Carlee Wines on the campus of the University of Connecticut earlier this year pleaded no contest last week to the charge that he was indeed the driver of the SUV. The vehicle that struck Wines did not stop at the accident scene. Wines, who was a freshman at UConn, died of her injuries two days later. Anthony Alvino, 18, of Lindenhurst, N.Y., entered the no contest plea before Rockville Superior Court Judge Terrence Sullivan on Oct. 26 when he appeared in court in Rockville, Conn. According to a Rockville Superior Court spokeswoman who declined to identify herself, Alvino was represented in the matter by attorneys Richard Brown and John Maxwell. The spokeswoman said Alvino will be sentenced on Jan. 23. Three other persons were charged in connection with the accident that resulted in Wines' death 10 months ago. Wines, 19, was attempting to walk across a street on the edge of the UConn campus in Storrs when she was struck and injured in the early morning hours of Jan. 20. She died on Jan. 22 from injuries sustained in the accident. When the incident occurred Alvino was a student at St. Bonaventure University, Olean, N.Y., and was visiting friends on the UConn campus. Among other violations, Alvino was charged with misconduct with a motor vehicle (resulting in death) and evading responsibility. According to police, Wines was struck just after she stepped into a clearly marked crosswalk on North Eagleville Road on her way back to her dormitory. Alvino was said to be driving a 2004 Nissan Armada when he struck Wines. The vehicle was subsequently recovered by police in Levittown, N.Y. |
