Sports Shorts The Manalapan Soccer Club was recognized by the New York Red Bulls of Major League Soccer as the Youth Soccer Club of the Year. The club was involved throughout the year with the Red Bulls in the Red Bulls Training program, club outings, individual outings and promotions throughout the community. Manalapan was chosen from soccer clubs through New Jersey, New York and Connecticut. Georgian Court University women's cross country coach Kevin Lanz, Howell, was named the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Coach of the Year. Lanz, who also coaches Manalapan High School's girls track and field team, led the Lions to the CACC Championship at Belmont Plateau, Philadelphia, Pa. The Lions, led by overall champion Heather Miara (Sayreville), beat Felician College by 15 points, 57-72. It was Georgian Court's fourth CACC win in the last five years. This marked the second straight year that Lanz was selected the conference's Coach of the Year. Among the GCC harriers is sophomore Caitlin Cranwell, a Howell High School graduate. Morganville's Katherine Gooch and Howell's Ally Mullaney are starters on the Georgian Court University's women's soccer team that set a new single-season record for wins (13). The Lions, 13-7, earned the No. 3 seed for the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Tournament that gets underway this week at the home off the highest seeded team. Gooch, a junior defender, is a graduate of St. John Vianney and has four goals and three assists. Mullaney, also a junior, is a midfielder who starred at Brookdale Community College the previous two seasons. She has one assist. The Manalapan High School Football Alumni Dinner will be held on Nov. 21 in the school's cafeteria starting at 6 p.m. All former and current Brave football players are welcomed to attend. Freehold's Thomas F. Luchento, a longtime standardbred horseman, has been re-elected to a third one-year term as president of the Standardbred Breeders and Owners Association of New Jersey. Other officers elected for 2007-08 were: horse owner Ed Razzetti, Hasbrouck Heights, vice president; Martin O'Hare, Cream Ridge, manager of Joie De Vie Farm in Jacobstown, second vice president; longtime trainer Kelvin Harrison, Clarksburg, third vice president; owner Alfred Ochsner, Monroe Township, treasurer; and owner Anthony Roman, Clarksburg, secretary. Three new board members were seated. They are: Mark Mullen, Hightstown, manager of his family's Fair Winds Farm in Cream Ridge, part owner of Heritage Hill Farm in Allentown, in the breeder category; Dr. Stephen P. Dey III, Allentown, vice president of Dey Equine Veterinarians and part owner of Heritage Hill Farm in Alletown, in the breeder category; and Robert Boni, Secaucus, owner of the Northwood Bloodstock Agency, in the owner category. |
