Halloween events to continue

FREEHOLD - The borough's Halloween Spooktacular events will continue this week as the Oct. 31 trick-or-treat holiday draws near.

A jack-o'-lantern contest will be held on Oct. 27 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the Hall of Records plaza, Main Street.

According to Spooktacular committee member Jean Holtz, participants will need to bring a carved pumpkin (along with a small votive candle), which will be displayed and judged in several age groups.

"The hundreds of jack-o'-lanterns cast a lovely light on a great night out in the cool autumn air," Holtz said.

Prizes, apple cider and doughnuts will be part of the fun, as well as a contest to guess the number of candy corns in a jar. The contest winner will receive a $100 prize.

The annual Halloween parade will step off at 1 p.m. Oct. 28.

"This parade is one of the best in the area with hundreds of costumed children, high school bands, professional musicians, floats and other marchers," Holtz said.

Children can line up for the parade and costume judging at the Freehold Raceway parking lot off Manalapan Avenue. Judging will begin at noon and end at 12:45 p.m. Prizes will be awarded in several age groups, including a category for families.

The parade will travel from Manalapan Avenue to West Main Street to the center of town. According to Holtz, prizes will be awarded at the conclusion of the parade at the Hall of Records plaza at 2 p.m.
