Resident charged with assault on cop

MANALAPAN - Police have charged a township resident with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon following a traffic stop that resulted in a police officer being transported to a hospital.

Police said Steven Elliot Cohen, 54, of Longstreet Road, was stopped by Patrolman William Cytryszewski at 5:30 p.m. Oct. 4 on Taylors Mills Road. Cohen was identified by police as a married attorney.

According to a press release, Cytryszewski, 27, stopped Cohen's 2007 Nissan Murano after observing a traffic violation. The press release did not specifically say why the officer pulled Cohen over.

Police said when Cohen was handed the summonses by the officer he began to drive away from the scene as Cytryszewski was still explaining the violations to him.

At that point Cohen pulled his vehicle onto Cytryszewski's foot and refused to move the vehicle, trapping the officer, according to the press release. Shortly thereafter Patrolman Adam Sosnowski responded to the scene, helped to get the vehicle off the officer and placed Cohen under arrest.

Police said Cohen was processed and released after posting $10,000 bail, with no option to pay 10 percent of the bail. He was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and reckless driving.

Cytryszewski was transported to CentraState Medical Center, Freehold Township, by the Englishtown-Manalapan First Aid Squad. Police said he was treated and released.
