Cops seek person who took victim from crash scene
Two young adults killed in accident on Center Street, Freehold Township
BY CLARE MARIE CELANO Staff Writer
Freehold Township police are looking for the person or persons who removed Robert D. Landry, 19, of Bradley Beach, from the scene of the Oct. 5 motor vehicle crash that took the lives of Michael C. Baldwin, 20, of Freehold Township, and Michael Anthony Phillips, 19, of Freehold Borough.

Landry, who suffered injuries in the crash that took place in Freehold Township at 10:10 p.m. on Center Street at the intersection of Ginesi Drive, was removed from the accident scene and taken to his sister's home in Freehold Borough before police officers arrived at the scene of the crash, according to Freehold Township police Lt. Dean Smith.

The fatal crash occurred when a 2005 Dodge Neon was traveling toward Kozloski Road on Center Street when Baldwin, who police are almost 100 percent certain was operating the vehicle, failed to negotiate a curve in the road, Smith said.

The vehicle struck a curve, a telephone pole and a street sign before overturning. According to police, there were five people in the Dodge and a number of people were ejected from the vehicle before it came to rest on its roof.

Smith told Greater Media Newspapers on Monday that police are looking for anyone who has any information concerning the crash. He said there were several other cars in the area of the crash carrying friends of people in the Dodge and that although those cars were not directly involved in the accident, police believe they were all en route to the same destination.

Police said Savonte B. Parker, 19, of Howell, and Justin T. Freeman, 19, of Freehold Borough, were injured in the crash and were transported to Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune, for treatment of injuries.

On Oct. 8, John Shaffer, a spokesman for Jersey Shore University Medical Center, said Freeman was being discharged that day and Parker was in critical condition in the intensive care unit.

Baldwin was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, police said.

Phillips was transported from the accident scene to CentraState Medical Center, Freehold Township, and was subsequently transported to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, New Brunswick. Phillips died of his injuries at 5:10 p.m. Oct. 6.

Police believe Landry was moved from the accident scene to his sister's home in Freehold Borough and then taken to CentraState Medical Center by her.

Police eventually received a call from a staff member at the hospital who said Landry could have been a part of the Center Street accident, Smith said.

Smith said Landry was subsequently transported to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital for treatment of injuries he suffered in the crash.

Jake Peltzman, a spokesman at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, said on Oct. 8 that Landry had been discharged from the hospital, but would not say when.

Smith said it appears that speed was a contributing factor in the crash. When asked if alcohol could have been a factor, he said police are looking into that possibility.

The crash is under investigation by Freehold Township Police Officer Patrick Fallon with the assistance of the Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office and the Monmouth County Serious Collision Analysis Response Team (SCART).

Freehold Township police, Freehold Borough police, MONOC paramedics, the Freehold First Aid Squad, the East Freehold Fire Department, the Freehold Fire Department, the Monmouth County Medical Examiner's Office and SCART assisted at the scene.

Anyone with information is asked to call Lt. Dean Smith at (732) 462-7500.
