Township native part of delegation
Auniversity professor with strong ties to Freehold Township was named by President George W. Bush to be a member of a presidential delegation that attended the opening ceremonies of the Special Olympics World Summer Games in Shanghai, China, on Oct. 2.

Dr. Lynn Fuchs, a professor of special education and human development at Vanderbilt University, Nashville, Tenn., was among the American representatives who traveled to the Far East, according to a press release from the White House.

Fuchs, the former Lynn Shteir, grew up in Freehold Township. She is the daughter of Leon and Beatrice Shteir. Her father ran the former Smithburg general store on Route 537.

Fuchs' grandfather was Herman Shteir, who served on the Township Committee in neighboring Millstone Township for 20 years and was the mayor for 15 years.

Fuchs is the niece of Joel and Beverly Stern of Freehold Township.

Beverly Stern, the retired director of nursing for the Freehold Township K-8 School District, said her niece attended the West Freehold School, Freehold Township, from kindergarten through eighth grade, graduating in the 1960s. She attended Rutgers Preparatory School before going on to college.

According to the White House press release, Margaret Spellings, the U.S. Secretary of Education, is leading the delegation to China.

Joining Spellings and Fuchs are:

• Clark T. Randt Jr., United States Ambassador to the People's Republic of China.

• John H. Hager, former assistant secretary of education (Special Education and Rehabilitative Services).

• Hall of Fame baseball player Ernie Banks.

• Michelle Kwan, figure skating champion and American public diplomacy envoy.

• Eunice Kennedy Shriver, founder of the Special Olympics.

• Dr. Timothy P. Shriver, chairman of the board of the Special Olympics.

• Anne Sweeney, co-chairman, Disney Media Networks, and president, Disney- ABC Television Group.

• Jennifer Polk Wardlow, International Global Messenger, Special Olympics.

Transitional services to be discussed Oct. 9

Representatives from local support agencies will join the Freehold Regional High School District's Special Education Advisory Committee to review social opportunities and transitional services available to young adults with varying disabilities.

The workshop will be held at the 5-Star Café in Freehold High School, Freehold Borough, on Oct. 9 at 9 a.m.

Represented agencies will include the Division of Developmental Disabilities, the Division of Vocational Rehabilitation Services, the Social Security Administration, the ARC of Monmouth County, NJ WINS, the Monmouth County Park System's Teen Scene, and Howell's Teen Adventure.
