Arc clients enjoy fishing derby
Members of the Noontime Optimist Club of Freehold gathered on the cool morning of Sept. 16 at Lake Topanemus, Freehold Township, to host a fishing derby for some special people. Clients of The Arc of Monmouth were invited to enjoy the day.

The Arc of Monmouth is a nonprofit organization in Monmouth County providing services and support for individuals who have mental retardation, as well as for their families, according to a press release.

Sheila Saul, chair of the fishing derby, said the club has been running the event for about 15 years. Many of the Arc clients have participated year after year and look forward to the opportunity to do it again. Each Optimist partners with an Arc client to fish at the lake's edge. The Optimist Club provides the fishing poles, floats, hooks and bait.

Almost 30 minutes went by before the first fish measuring 4 inches in length was caught by Chris D. Was it really a surprise that it was just about Noontime? There was no prize for the first fish, but the cheers and applause brought a smile to everyone's face.

After a morning of fishing, a barbecue luncheon with hot dogs, hamburgers, side dishes and desserts was served. Portions of the luncheon were sponsored by the Freeman Funeral Home, Manalapan, and Chicken Holiday, Manalapan. Tim Dowd, director of the Police Athletic League of New Jersey, Freehold, provided the grill, manned by Mike Dymyd, tables, chairs and assorted equipment necessary to make the day a success, according to the press release.

After lunch each Arc client received a certificate of participation and then the winners of the derby were announced. The trophy for Biggest Fish, measuring 6 5/8 inches went to Janet D. Reeling in four fish, Rick S. won the trophy for Most Fish Caught.

The Noontime Optimist Club offers many opportunities for children. Optimists seek to encourage and enhance the lives of youngsters in the community. A spelling bee for fifth-graders, a fishing derby for 7- to 12-year-olds, youth recognition awards and scholarships for high school graduates are just a few of the projects the Noontime Optimist Club of Freehold completes throughout the year .
