Resident disappointed with coverage about veterans memorial
Iam so disappointed that your coverage of the Marlboro memorial, which was dedicated on Sept. 3, stopped where it did.

I think it was wonderful that the group of volunteers who made the gardens absolutely beautiful should have been recognized. They did a spectacular job and the gardens are lovely, comforting and peaceful.

But the whole purpose of the memorial was totally overlooked.

There was no mention that all five flags of the armed forces were raised individually while that service's song was played.

There was no mention that the American flag was raised in honor for all who had fallen to defend this country.

There was no mention that flags for the fire and police were raised during the ceremony.

There was no mention that a list of names of active military was announced to the crowd to honor those who are willing to keep this country from harm.

There was no mention that lights will be shining on the flags in reverence to the military.

There was no mention that the "old veterans," some of whom had fought in World War II, were present and helped in the raising of the flags.

Not one picture of all those flags which represent the "good" of this nation. Not one picture of the veterans who stood proud and with distinction.

What is the matter with your paper? Obviously your paper is not pro-military.

It doesn't matter who is in office or who is running for office, whether one agrees or disagrees with the orders of the day … the military deserves to be honored for their sacrifices - being away from family and friends for months at a time and some ultimately dying for the cause; their loyalty - always faithful; their steadfastness - always ready to defend and protect; their beliefs - in country, God and family; their code of honor - ethics and truth; and obedience - always there no matter what, and that without them we are doomed.

If your paper was pro-military, it would have found the real purpose of this memorial. Shame on you! I doubt you will print this letter.

Marlboro

Editor's note: The News Transcript published an article about the dedication of the Marlboro veterans memorial on Aug. 29 in advance of the Sept. 3 ceremony so that community members would be aware of and able to attend the event.

The article noted that the memorial honors veterans, active military personnel and local police officers and firefighters who died in the line of duty. The article also mentioned the flags that the writer of this letter discusses.
