Veterans to gather for ceremony

MARLBORO - Local veterans are expected to attend a ribbon cutting ceremony for the relocated veterans memorial outside Town Hall on Labor Day, Sept. 3.

Councilman Joseph Pernice described the memorial as a place where people may go and reflect.

"It will be open 24 hours a day so that anyone may come and sit on the benches to reflect," he said.

The memorial is to honor Marlboro's veterans; soldiers who are actively serving the United States; and any local police officers or firefighters who died in the line of duty.

The veterans memorial has been moved from directly in front of Town Hall to a landscaped island in the municipal parking lot. Pernice said the monument will beautify the outside of Town Hall for any residents who come to the municipal building.

Surrounding the area are seven flagpoles, five representing the branches of the armed forces, in addition to the American flag and the New Jersey state flag.

Pernice said the veterans memorial project has been three years in the making. The ribbon cutting ceremony is expected to start at 10 a.m. Sept. 3.

In other news, the Sept. 11 memorial behind the Marlboro Recreation Community Center has received new landscaping.

Dr. Paul Kovalski, who worked on the memorial's design, told the News Transcript that the memorial recently received new flowers and landscaping.

The memorial has 14 dogwood trees to represent the 14 citizens of Marlboro who lost their lives in the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.
