Police officer hurt in scuffle
FREEHOLD - A resident's behavior because of what police said was an intoxicated state resulted in a trip to the CentraState Medical Center emergency room for a Freehold Borough police officer.
According to Freehold Borough police Lt. Mark Wodell, Patrolman Rich Ciampa responded to a South Street residence in connection with a family disturbance on July 30 at about 8 p.m.
According to Wodell, police were called to the home by the father of Greg Carter, 26, of South Street. Carter's father wanted the young man removed from the residence because his son was intoxicated, the lieutenant said.
Upon the officers' arrival, Greg Carter became verbally abusive, disruptive and agitated with Ciampa, according to Wodell, who said, "Without warning, Greg flicked a lit cigarette at Officer Ciampa's face, striking him in the right eye."
Ciampa continued to try to place Carter under arrest as the young man continued to struggle with the officer. During the struggle, Carter continued to be verbally abusive and disruptive, according to police.
Patrolman Duane Stassi came to assist Ciampa and Carter was eventually secured. He was charged with aggravated assault on a police officer, resisting arrest with force and obstruction of the administration of the law. He was taken to the Monmouth County jail, Freehold Township, in default of $25,000.
Wodell said Ciampa was treated and released from CentraState Medical Center. As of Aug. 6, Ciampa had returned to work and was fine, Wodell said.
