Manalapan pair charged with bias intimidation

MANALAPAN - On July 31, Adriane Lynn Tropiano, 40, and Angela Marie DeNigris, 40, who live at different addresses on Parkview Way, were arrested and charged with bias intimidation and terroristic threats in connection with a series of threats that were made against a Manalapan couple.

Parkview Way is off Union Hill Road in the Bucks Head residential development.

According to a press release from the Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office, the arrests were the result of a joint investigation conducted by the prosecutor's office and the Manalapan Police Department.

The investigation was initiated after a series of threatening and racially derogatory telephone calls were made to the Manalapan couple over a month-long period in June and July. The couple owns residential property in Manalapan, which they had rented to an African-American family.

According to the press release, the phone calls were made anonymously to the Manalapan couple, but both suspects were captured on a local supermarket's security camera videotape making two of the calls on a pay telephone. Each of these two phone calls included threats of vandalism and arson against the homeowners in retaliation for their actions in renting their house to an African-American family.

The charge of terroristic threats alleges that the defendants threatened to commit the crime of arson. Terroristic threats is a third degree crime and upon conviction carries a maximum five-year state prison sentence.

The bias intimidation charge alleges that the defendants threatened the immediate commission of the crime of arson with the purpose to intimidate the landlords' tenants because of their race or skin color. Bias intimidation is a second degree crime and upon conviction carries a maximum 10-year state prison sentence.

Manalapan Municipal Court Judge James Newman set bail for Tropiano at $25,000 with no 10 percent option. DeNigris was released on her own recognizance. A condition of both bails is that Tropiano and DeNigris have no further contact with the victims of the threats.

Monmouth County Prosecutor Luis A. Valentin said, "These crimes are the direct result of racial bias against a particular minority group. All Monmouth County residents are entitled to live their lives free from such fear and intimidation. Crimes such as this threaten our entire community and require vigilance from law enforcement."

Valentin further noted that notwithstanding these arrests, the investigation is continuing. He asked anyone with information regarding these incidents to contact Detective David D'Amico of the Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office at 1-800-533-7443 and/or Detective Sgt. Robert Rushnak of the Manalapan Police Department at (732) 446-4300.
