Scouts help Pace Car program

FREEHOLD TOWNSHIP - Cub Scout Pack 155 recently signed up 81 area residents for the Freehold Township Police Department's "Please Slow Down, It's Our Town" Pace Car program.

"These Scouts did a great job," Police Officer Brian Worth said. "I was really impressed by how many people they registered for the Pace Car program."

The Cub Scouts, ages 6-11, worked with Worth to encourage adults to participate in the Pace Car program. They had a special table set up during the Concert and Movie in the Park at Michael J. Tighe Park on June 30.

According to a press release, the Pace Car program asks drivers to pledge to drive the speed limit, yield to pedestrians, follow all posted road signs and to display a Pace Car magnet on their vehicle.

"People are going to drive safer now because they have committed to [the Pace Car program], and I know they will now follow the laws of our roads and make them safer," said Cub Scout Eric Levine, who signed up more than 20 residents.

Community Police Officer Todd Smith said, "It is great that kids at this age are learning to interact with the public and the police, and are able to do a service for the community at the same time. Everybody benefits."

Pack 155 Cubmaster Daniel Simon said this was a great learning experience for the Scouts.

"The boys had a unique opportunity to work side-by-side with a police officer and to learn civic responsibility by participating in a community service project that directly impacts their own neighborhoods. We are very proud of what these boys have accomplished," Simon said.
