In the Dr. Richard Fernicola, author of "Twelve Days of Terror," about the 1916 Matawan Creek shark attack, will be the honored guest at the second annual SharkFest, July 21, 4-9 p.m., at the Matawan Community Center and Terhune Park, Broad and South streets, Matawan. The rain date is July 22. SharkFest is co-sponsored by the Matawan-Aberdeen Chamber of Commerce and the Matawan Alliance. Dr. Fernicola is the leading expert on shark attacks. He will sign copies of his book and will accompany a bus tour of relevant sites in Matawan, talking and answering questions about the 1916 attack that killed four people and injured a fifth. Following the 2001 publication of "Twelve Days of Terror," the Discovery Channel produced a documentary film based on the book, reprising its title. The film will be shown during SharkFest at 4 p.m., 5:45 p.m., and 7:30 p.m. at the community center.
"Show Tunes, Standards, and Other Good Music" will be performed by instrumental guitarist Paul Pugliese in a concert July 25 at 7 p.m. at the Monmouth County Library Headquarters, 125 Symmes Drive, Manalapan. The program features a variety of music from classical to pop and from standards to show tunes. Some of the featured songs include "Moonlight Sonata," "Over the Rainbow," musical hits from the Beatles, a Bob Dylan medley, old-fashioned love songs, and much more. Paul Pugliese has been playing guitar since 1959 and was influenced by musicians such as Chet Atkins and Les Paul. He has been a guitar instructor for more than 40 years. Brick Children's Community Theatre will present Disney's "Beauty and the Beast" Aug. 3, 4, 10 and 11 at 7:30 p.m. and Aug. 5 at 3 p.m. at Brick Township High School. 346 Chambers Bridge Road. The Jackson Women of Today are currently selling tickets for the production of Rodgers and Hammerstein's musical "Carousel" to be performed Aug. 3 at The Algonquin Arts Theatre in Manasquan. The cost of tickets is $30 per person, advanced sales only. Proceeds will benefit Camp Quality, a summer camp for children with cancer. The Jackson Women of Today, a nonprofit organization that operates the Jackson Food Pantry year-round in addition to other community endeavors, will also benefit from the event. The Ocean County Artists' Guild, Ocean and Chestnut avenues in Island Heights, will host a Juried Photography Show during July. Nancy Ori will be this year's judge. Ori, Berkeley Heights, studied with Ansel Adams and is director of photography and video production, New Jersey Media Center, in Berkeley Heights. The opening reception will take place at the guild on July 1, 1-4 p.m. and is free to the public. The Monmouth Museum located on the campus of Brookdale Community College, Newman Springs Road, Lincroft, will present the oil paintings of Philip Carroll as part of the New Jersey Emerging Artists Series July 6-Aug. 5. An opening reception will be held July 6 from 6 to 8 p.m. Carroll will share insights on his work in a discussion at the museum during "Gallery Talk" July 18 from 7 to 8 p.m.
