Council fills WMUA seat
BY MARK ROSMAN
Staff Writer

MARLBORO - The Township Coun-cil has filled an open commissioner's seat on the Western Monmouth Utilities Authority (WMUA).

At its June 28 meeting, the council voted 4-0 with one abstention to appoint Catherine Zulferino to the WMUA to complete the term of her late husband, Ralph Zulferino Jr., who died on June 8 at the age of 48.

Ralph Zulferino had been appointed to a commissioner's position on the WMUA for a term of five years, beginning on Feb. 1, 2005.

Catherine Zulferino has been appointed to serve the remainder of his term.

In its resolution naming Zulferino to the authority, the council said, "Due to the unfortunate death of Mr. Zulferino ... the council desires to appoint Catherine Zulferino ... to serve the remainder of her late husband's term."

Voting for the appointment were council members Patricia Morelli, Joseph Pernice, Rosa Tragni and Steve Rosen-thal. Council President Jeff Cantor abstained on the vote.

The WMUA, based in Manalapan, provides sewer service to customers in Manalapan, Marlboro, Englishtown and Freehold Township. There are four commissioners who oversee the operation of the authority.

Two commissioners are appointed by the Marlboro Township Council and two commissioners are appointed by the Manalapan Township Committee.

Zulferino will join Eric Abraham and Steve Toubin of Manal-apan and Jeff Hymo-witz of Marlboro on the authority's board of commissioners.

In its resolution appointing Catherine Zulferino to the WMUA, the council recognized and commended Ralph Zulferino's "dedication to the township and to the WMUA."

Kathy Leatherman, the general manager of the WMUA, said each commissioner receives a $4,000 annual stipend for his or her service on the authority. Each commissioner is also eligible to receive health benefits offered and paid for through the WMUA.
