Council honors Marcus MARLBORO - The Township Council and the Department of Parks and Recreation recognized township resident Stuart Marcus as the Recreation Volunteer of the Year for 2007 at the council's June 14 meeting. Stephen Dick, the chairman of the Marlboro Recreation and Parks Commission, presented Marcus with a plaque acknowledging his work with the recreation department for the past 20 years. Marcus was involved with the department's youth soccer program, acting as a coach and organizing the Marlboro Soccer Association's invitational tournament. "Stu has been great for our soccer program here in Marlboro," said Dick. "He is responsible for much of the success of the program." Dick went on to acknowledge that Marcus had volunteered as a coach even when his sons were no longer participating with the program, something Dick noted as unusual. Marcus is also a volunteer with the Marlboro First Aid Squad. "I would also like to extend a personal thank you to Stu," council President Jeff Cantor said. "Even after his hip surgery he was still active with us in the first-aid squad." Mayor Robert Kleinberg also extended his thanks to Marcus for his community service as he shook his hand and presented him with the award. The Recreation Volunteer of the Year award is presented annually to community members who demonstrate extraordinary efforts and a strong commitment to the recreation department. In other business, a motion was made to renew liquor licenses, among them was a license for the Spirits liquor store on Union Hill Road. And Paul Abelow, a six-year resident of Marlboro, was sworn in as deputy mayor/director of community relations. Mayor Robert Kleinberg said there are many community initiatives his administration is pursuing and said Abelow will provide assistance with those programs. Kleinberg said Abelow grew up in Brooklyn, N.Y., and since moving to Marlboro he has joined the Robertsville Volunteer Fire Company and the Morganville First Aid Squad. Abelow lives with his wife, Sandra, and children, Andrew and Ryan. Kleinberg described his new deputy mayor as a community-minded person.
