Government should stop being a nanny to everyone

In his May 31 letter, "Laws Should Be Defined as Primary Offenses," Barry Denkensohn advocated promoting both cell phone use (while driving) and the seat belt laws from secondary to primary offenses.

He fails to recognize (or acknowledge) the difference between the two. A cell user is interacting with another person who is unaware of traffic conditions. So when a traffic hazard arises, the driver tends to remain on the phone an extra time before reacting so as not to appear rude to the person on the other end. Thus he/she is more of a hazard to other drivers than if merely eating or combing hair.

On the other hand, seat belt violators are no hazard to other drivers. Their stupidity jeopardizes primarily themselves, and secondarily those who depend on them for financial support (if they are injured or killed) and companionship. If these drivers don't care about those closest to them, why should we as a society?

If the stupid want to kill themselves off, good riddance. That would just improve the remaining gene pool.

I'm fed up with the Denkensohns of the world stripping away our freedoms while trying to turn us into a nanny nation, controlled by a bunch of do-gooders who think they know what's best for the stupid masses. Yes, let's make the cell phone law a primary offense, but completely eliminate all seat belt laws.
