County association honors Freehold Twp. school nurse

Heidi Toth
FREEHOLD TOWNSHIP - Heidi Toth, district nurse for the Freehold Township schools, was recently chosen from among about 130 of her peers as the Monmouth County School Nurse of the Year by the executive board of the Monmouth County School Nurses Association (MCSNA).

Toth received a plaque and recognition at the annual school nurse dinner on May 8. Her name was also submitted to the state association where she may receive further recognition as the New Jersey State School Nurse of the Year, according to a press release from the Freehold Township School District.

Millie Evans, past president of the MCSNA, said Toth was chosen due to her many contributions to the community and throughout the state.

"All nurses do important work and deserve recognition, but Heidi went above and beyond and continues to do so," Evans said.

Toth is currently the school nurse at the Early Childhood Learning Center, Stillwells Corner Road, as well as the district nurse to coordinate health services, develop and evaluate policies and procedures, and collaborate with parents, staff, administrators and outside agencies. In addition, she provides intensive care nursing for children and adults in the Post Anesthesia and Post Partum/Nursery Unit at Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank.

She started in Freehold Township as the Eisenhower Middle School nurse nine years ago and became active in several school groups, including peer leaders. She has also been an adjunct professor at Monmouth University, a high school nurse and a published author for a chapter on Lyme disease in Individualized Health Care Plans for the School Nurse. She holds an MS degree in health sciences and an MSN degree in nursing.

"I am overwhelmed and honored to receive this award," Toth said. "I became a member of the association in 1993 to network with my peers and keep current with school nurse practices. It is wonderful to be recognized and supported."

Toth's husband, Ken, daughter, Brittany, mother, Trudy Kertesz, Freehold Township Superintendent of Schools William Setaro, Assistant Superintendent Sandra Brower, ECLC Administrator Kristin Pschorr, and each of the district's school nurses attended the MCSNA dinner and award presentation to show their support of Toth's efforts.
