Mishkin elected to term as hospital chief of staff

Dr. Steven Mishkin
FREEHOLD TOWNSHIP - Dr. Steven Mishkin has been elected to a two-year term as chief of staff by the medical-dental staff of CentraState Medical Center. Mishkin, an ophthalmologist who chaired CentraState's Ophthalmology Department from 1997 to 2006, joined the medical staff in 1988. He was assistant chief of staff the past two years and has been a member of the CentraState Healthcare System Board of Trustees since 2003.

Mishkin is in private practice, Millennium Eye Care, which operates five offices in central New Jersey. Board certified in ophthalmology, he earned a medical degree from Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx, N.Y., and completed his residency in ophthalmology at Montefiore Medical Center-Albert Einstein College of Medicine. He lives with his family in the Morganville section of Marlboro.

Also elected to two-year terms were Dr. James J. Matera, assistant chief of staff, and Dr. Gregg Berkowitz, secretary-treasurer. Matera, a nephrologist in private practice in South River and Freehold, Nephrology-Hypertension Assoc., joined CentraState's medical staff in 1994 and has been a member of the Board of Trustees since 2005.

Board certified in internal medicine and nephrology, he earned a medical degree from the University of Osteopathic Medicine and Health Sciences in Des Moines, Iowa. Voted CentraState Physician of the Year by the medical-dental staff in 2004 and earlier this year, Matera is director of medical education and chaired the Department of Internal Medicine from 2001 to 2004. He resides in Monroe Township.

Berkowitz, a board-certified orthopedic surgeon, has been on the staff of CentraState Medical Center since 1991. Berkowitz served as the chair of CentraState's Orthopedic Surgery Department from 1998 to 2005. He received his medical degree from State University of New York Health Science Center, where he completed his residency. He was voted physician of the year by the CentraState nursing staff in 2006. He resides in Freehold Township.
