New recreation director excited to be in Howell
BY TOYNETT HALL
Staff Writer

TOYNETT HALL Bryan Haltigan is the new parks and recreation director in Howell.
HOWELL - Bryan Haltigan, a 34-year-old native of Brooklyn, N.Y., is Howell's new parks and recreation director. Haltigan, who holds a master's degree in physical education and athletics administration from Springfield College, said he plans to revive the department.

Haltigan, the former recreation coordinator of neighboring Wall Township, moved to Monmouth County in 2005. He said he has worked in many different environments, including the fitness industry, college athletics, marketing and sales.

"These different business experiences make me a well-rounded professional. I can see myself using all of those skills in this position," he said.

Haltigan said his No. 1 goal is to make Howell's recreation department one of the best in the state.

"There are a lot of different families and children here in Howell with different interests. I want to offer different recreational opportunities to all kinds of people," he said.

Haltigan is enthusiastic about his new position and said he will evaluate Howell's recreation needs before implementing any of his ideas.

"I want to take some time to evaluate all the needs of the community and then structure my programs to improve the town around those needs," he said.

In addition to implementing new programs, Haltigan said he will evaluate the possibility of upgrading existing indoor and outdoor facilities.

Haltigan will serve as the municipality's representative on Howell's recreation advisory committee. Doing so, he said, will allow him to get direct input from residents on issues pertaining to recreation.

"The people I have met are very excited about positive change," he said.

Deputy Township Manager Helene Schlegel said out of all three candidates who were brought back for a second interview, Haltigan was the most impressive.

"Mr. Haltigan's variety of experiences impressed us the most. We felt he would be best suited for Howell," Schlegel said.

According to Schlegel, Haltigan will have a variety of tasks.

"His duties will be to provide a variety of recreational experiences for all ages, preschool through adult; to oversee the cultural arts committee; to maintain the township's parks and facilities; and to streamline the criminal history background process on all volunteers. He has our full support and confidence," Schle-gel said.
