WalkAmerica set for April 29
More than half a million babies are born too soon every year. Many die. More than 120,000 babies are born with serious birth defects that can mean a lifetime disability. That's why the March of Dimes is leading the national fight to save babies from premature birth - the leading killer of newborns - and from other serious threats to infant health. WalkAmerica is the organization's largest fundraiser. The Monmouth County WalkAmerica will take place on April 29 at the Taylor Pavilion on the boardwalk in Belmar. For more information about WalkAmerica, or to join the event at Belmar's Taylor Pavilion on April 29, visit walkamerica.org or call 1-800-525-WALK. "A baby is a special gift, and the March of Dimes works hard with your donations to support education, advocacy and research to give every baby a healthy start in life," said Nancy Glawon of Allstate Insurance, the 2007 WalkAmerica chair. "Last year Monmouth County WalkAmerica raised a record-breaking $325,000 to help find the causes of premature birth. Our goal this year is to reach $365,000. The WalkAmerica route will travel along the boardwalk. There will be refreshments, entertainment for the entire family and music by 94.3, The Point." According to a press release, with the community's support in WalkAmerica, the March of Dimes conducts research into causes and preventions of premature birth and birth defects. The March of Dimes also brings information and emotional support to families who have had a premature or sick baby who is being treated in a neonatal intensive care unit.
