Grants will boost local traffic safety

FREEHOLD TOWNSHIP - The Township Committee is stepping up traffic safety efforts with two resolution applications.

At a recent meeting, the committee authorized applications for a red light safety program grant called "Stop For Red Light-Stop For Us" and for a seat belt enforcement program grant called "Click It or Ticket" from the New Jersey Division of Highway Traffic Safety.

The grants will provide funding and education for police enforcement. The total funding requested will amount to $21,000.

In other business, a resolution authorizing measures to control gypsy moths was passed. The gypsy moth, also known as Lymantria Dispar, has caused heavy defoliating of tree and plant growth in Freehold Township.

According to the state Department of Agriculture and the Monmouth County Shade Tree Commission, continued destruction of foliage may result in a the loss of valuable forest land and trees. An aerial spray program targeting the gypsy moths will begin May 1 and continue through mid-June.
