Obituaries
Marcella Ladd
Miss Ladd, 91, of Freehold, died March 24, 2007, at CentraState Medical Center, Freehold Township. Born in Millville, she had resided in Freehold from her time in kindergarten until graduation from Freehold High School, Freehold Borough, in 1935. She entered Tennent College of Christian Education in Overbrook, Pa., in 1938 and graduated with a degree in religious education in 1942. In the 1960s she returned to Freehold. She served at nine churches, primarily in Michigan, Illinois, and most recently in East Orange. Miss Ladd was a member of the Reformed Church of Freehold. She was predeceased by two sisters, June Ladd Prest and Harriet Ladd Kern. She is survived by three generations of nieces and nephews. Visiting was held at the Reformed Church of Freehold. A funeral service was held at the church followed by interment at Maplewood Cemetery, Freehold Township. Memorial donations may be made to the Reformed Church of Freehold. The Higgins Memorial Home, Freehold, was in charge of arrangements.
Janice Wilson Neff
Mrs. Neff, 91, of Freehold Township, died March 29, 2007, at Applewood Estates, Freehold Township. Born in New Brunswick, she had resided in Metuchen and in the Rossmoor community in Monroe before moving to Freehold Township in 1991. Mrs. Neff was a graduate of Princeton Country Day School and a 1937 graduate of Wellesley College. She was a member of Old Tennent Presbyterian Church, Tennent section of Manalapan. Mrs. Neff was predeceased by her first husband, Carl Dietz, in 1952, and her second husband, Larry Neff, in 1977; and a stepdaughter, Corrine N. Pawling. She is survived by two sons, David Dietz of Harding Township and Carl A Dietz Jr. of Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.; a daughter, Nancy Dietz Donahue of Chadds Ford, Pa.; a stepson, John Neff of Berkeley, Calif.; a sister, Nancy Ainslie of Edison; 10 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. A memorial service was held at Old Tennent Presbyterian Church. Memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association, N.J. T. Doug Gillespie
Mr. Gillespie, 79, of the Adelphia section of Howell, died April 2, 2007, at CentraState Medical Center, Freehold Township. Born in Mortlach, Canada, he moved to the U.S. in 1937. Prior to his retirement in 1991, he worked in the special maintenance department at the Monmouth County Park System for 15 years. Prior to that, he worked for Freehold Ford (formerly Cameron Roberson Ford) as an auto mechanic and later as a service manager until 1976. He attended Freehold area schools. A U.S. Army veteran, Mr. Gillespie was sent to Europe, where he was attached to Graves Registration as an identification analyst. He traveled all over Europe to battlefields, reclaiming the remains of American servicemen killed during World War II for burial in central cemeteries or to be brought home. He then served in Records and Research during the investigations in Versailles for the Nuremburg trials regarding those involved in the Holocaust. He was a member of the Adelphia Fire Company, Howell, joining in 1953 and serving actively for many years, and a member of American Legion Post 54 in Freehold. Mr. Gillespie was predeceased by three sisters, three brothers and three nephews. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Virginia (Louquet) Gillespie; two daughters and sons-in-law, Christine and Garrett Sague of Beachwood, and Laurieanne and Carl Patterson of the Ardena section of Howell; two sons and daughters-in-law, Douglas and Valerie Gillespie of Brielle, and Thomas D. and Alison Gillespie of Coopersburg, Pa.; seven grandchildren; and several nieces and their families. A funeral service was held at Clayton & McGirr Funeral Home, Freehold Township, followed by interment in Ardena Cemetery, Howell.
Edward A. Kerr
Mr. Kerr, 82, of Huntington, Long Island, N.Y., formerly of Farmingdale, N.Y., died April 11, 2007. He was predeceased by his wife, Margaret, in 1998. He was the chaplain of Northport American Legion Post 694 and a member of the Father Judge Council Knights of Columbus. He is survived by three daughters and son-in-laws, Kathleen and Robert Shortmeyer of Freehold Township, Peggy Joyce and George Marshall of Huntington Station, and Colleen and Jack Schumann of Huntington; six grandchildren, Scott Shortmeyer and wife Allison of Falls Church, Va., Erin Pietsch and husband Randy of Freehold Township, Kristin Shortmeyer of Freehold Township, Caitlin Schumann and Megan Schumann of Huntington, and Sean Marshall of Huntington Station; and great-granddaughter Lilly Kate Shortmeyer of Falls Church. Arrangements were under the direction of M.A. Connell Funeral Home, Huntington Station, Long Island, N.Y. A funeral Mass was celebrated Monday at St. Patrick's R.C. Church, Huntington. Burial was at Long Island National Cemetery, Pinelawn, N.Y. Memorial donations may be made to Huntington Hospital or the American Diabetes Association.
Connie (Placco) Incorvia
Mrs. Incorvia, 82, of Freehold, died April 10, 2007, at Bartley Healthcare Nursing & Rehabilitation, Jackson. Born in the Bronx, N.Y., she had resided in Old Bridge before moving to Freehold. She was a communicant of St. Thomas the Apostle Church, Old Bridge. Mrs. Incorvia was predeceased by her husband, Philip Incorvia, in 1984. Surviving are three sons and daughters-in-law, Richard and Nancy Incorvia of Iowa, Philip and Denise Incorvia of Connecticut, and Robert and Audrey Incorvia of Howell; three sisters, Marie, Josie and Martha; two brothers, Tony and Tom; five grandsons; two granddaughters; and a great-grandson. Funeral services were held at the Rezem Funeral Home, East Brunswick, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Thomas the Apostle Church. Entombment took place at Holy Cross Burial Park Mausoleum, South Brunswick.
Dominick Michael Viggiano
Mr. Viggiano, 75, of Freehold Township, died April 10, 2007, at home. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., he had lived there before moving to Freehold Township in 1970. He was a foreman with the Department of Sanitation for the City of New York for 20 years, retiring in 1975. He then worked as a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service in East Brunswick. Mr. Viggiano was a U.S. Navy veteran and served during the Korean War. He was predeceased by a brother and two sisters. Surviving are his wife, Sarah Viggiano; a son and daughter-in-law, John D. and Holly Viggiano of Jackson; two daughters and sons-in-law, Darlene Viggiano and her husband, Brent Branley, of Sacramento, Calif., and Janine Strauss and her husband, Brian, of Colts Neck; a sister, Rose Fazio of Brooklyn; and five grandchildren. A funeral service was held at Clayton & McGirr Funeral Home, Freehold Township, followed by interment in Brig. Gen. William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Arnytown. Agnes Marie Rosato Pilate
Mrs. Pilate, 65, of Hazlet, died April 12, 2007, at CentraState Medical Center, Freehold Township. Born in the Cliffwood section of Aberdeen, she had resided in Matawan prior to relocating to Hazlet 33 years ago. Mrs. Pilate was a homemaker. She was a communicant of Holy Family Roman Catholic Church, Union Beach. She was predeceased by her father, Frank Rosato. She is survived by her husband, Walter Pilate; her mother, Stella Grande Rosato of Hazlet; three daughters, Susan Pilate of Yardley, Pa., Sheryl Lynn Francisco of Union Beach, and Tina Marie Pilate of Hazlet; a sister, Veronica Potenza of Freehold; a brother, Frank Rosato of Union Beach; and five grandchildren. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at Holy Family Church. Entombment was at St. Joseph's Mausoleum, Keyport. Arrangements were by Day Funeral Home, Keyport. Raymond Keene Sr,
Mr. Keene, 72, of Manalapan, died April 2, 2007, at CentraState Medical Center, Freehold Township. He was born in St. Louis. Mr. Keene was a horse groomsman. He was a U.S. Army veteran. Surviving are two sons, Gregory Hyman and Raymond Keene Jr.; a daughter, Latasha Keene; and five grandchildren. A funeral service was held at New Hope Baptist Church, Freehold. Higgins Memorial Home, Freehold, was in charge of arrangements.
Anna Wyman
Mrs. Wyman, 99, of Marlboro, died April 2, 2007, at Monmouth County Care Center, Geraldine Thompson Division, Wall Township. Born in Union City, she had resided in Jersey City before moving to Marlboro in 1996. Mrs. Wyman was a press operator for Consolidated Laundries in Union City for 33 years before retiring in 1975. She was predeceased by her husband, James, in 1949; a son, James, in 1996; and a daughter, Joan Mattaliano, in 1997. She is survived by 10 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. A service was held at Woodbridge Memorial Gardens, Woodbridge. Freeman Funeral Home, Freehold, was in charge of arrangements.
Joseph Cilea
Mr. Cilea, 64, died April 3, 2007, at Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., he had lived in the Ridgewood section of Queens before moving to Marlboro 24 years ago. He was a communicant of St. Gabriel's Roman Catholic Church, Marlboro. Mr. Cilea owned Spanky's Beauty Salon, Staten Island, N.Y., and Switzerland Old World Gift Shoppe in the Poconos for many years before retiring. He was predeceased by his wife, Jean Marie, in 2000. Surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, Joseph and MaryAnn of Marlboro, and Domenick and Sherry of Marlboro; a brother, Frank of Queens; a sister and brother-in-law, Catherine and Eugene Santorufo of the Farmingville section of Long Island, N.Y.; and seven grandchildren. A funeral service was held at the Freeman Manalapan-Marlboro Funeral Home, Manalapan, followed by interment at St. Charles Cemetery, Pinelawn, N.Y.
Charlotte R. Dixon
Mrs. Dixon, 72, of Omaha, Neb., died April 4, 2007, at Immanuel Heritage Center, Omaha. Born in Jersey City, she had resided in Freehold before moving to Omaha one year ago. She was a secretary for C.N.A. Insurance Co., Cranbury, prior to her retirement in 1996. Mrs. Dixon was a former member of the Reformed Church of Freehold. She was predeceased by her husband, Thomas C. Dixon, in 2006; and a brother, Charles Small. She is survived by a son, Charles Dixon of Howell; and a daughter and son-in-law, Laura and Edward Smith of Omaha. A funeral service was held at the Reformed Church of Freehold, followed by interment at Old Tennent Cemetery, Tennent section of Manalapan. Julia G. Novak
Mrs. Novak, 66, of Manchester Township, died April 4, 2007, at home. Born in Gyor, Hungary, she had come to the U.S. in 1956 and had lived in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., Perth Amboy and East Windsor before moving to Manchester Township in 2006. Mrs. Novak had worked for American Can Co., Edison, for 14 years before retiring in 1989. She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Ava and Alfred Papetti of Colts Neck, and Anna and Richard McDermott of Jackson; a brother, Frank Kovacs of Florida; and six grandchildren. A funeral Mass was offered at St. Robert Bellarmine Roman Catholic Church, Freehold Township, followed by interment in Old Tennent Cemetery, Tennent section of Manalapan. Richard John Jehn
Mr. Jehn, 65, of Manalapan, died April 4, 2007, at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, New Brunswick. Born in Milwaukee, he had lived in Hazlet for 23 years before moving to Manalapan 16 years ago. He was a communicant of Our Lady of Mercy Roman Catholic Church, Englishtown. Mr. Jehn was a Monmouth County corrections officer in Freehold for 20 years before retiring in 2000 with the rank of sergeant. He was a U.S. Navy veteran. He was a former member of the Hazlet Volunteer Fire Company. Surviving are his wife of 45 years, Marie; a son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Gina of Tinton Falls; two daughters and sons-in-law, Susan and Lee Salisbury of South Brunswick, and Kathy Lynn and Michael Downey of Aberdeen; a brother, James of Florida; two sisters, JoAnn Brandao of Hazlet and Susan Strocker of Milwaukee; and seven grandchildren. A funeral service was held at Freeman Manalapan-Marlboro Funeral Home, Manalapan, followed by interment at Shoreland Cemetery, Hazlet.
Alfred J. Chelli
Mr. Chelli, 81, of Howell, died April 6, 2007, at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune. Born in Exeter, Pa., he had lived in East Brunswick for 30 years before moving to the Surrey Downs section of Howell in 1986. Mr. Chelli was an inspector for General Motors, Linden, for 32 years, retiring in 1985. He was a parishioner of St. Robert Bellarmine Roman Catholic Church, Freehold Township. A U.S. Army veteran, he served as a sergeant in the military police during World War II in northern France. Mr. Chelli is survived by his wife, Lucy Dominick Chelli; a son, Alfred Chelli of Jackson; three daughters, Mary Ellen Speciale of East Brunswick, Laura Saker of Millstone, and Elaine Zullo of Hightstown; a sister, Lena Faiollace of Philadelphia; and seven grandchildren. Michael Halick Sr.
Mr. Halick, 87, of Freehold Township, died April 7, 2007, at home. Born in Bayonne, he had lived in Roselle before moving to Freehold Township in 1985. He was a machine shop supervisor for Texaco, Bayonne, for more than 35 years, retiring in 1984. He then worked as a field supervisor for Clean Harbors, Perth Amboy. Mr. Halick was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II. He was a parishioner at St. Robert Bellarmine Catholic Church, Freehold Township. He was predeceased by his wife, Anne Katherine Halick, in 2006, and a brother, John, in 1994. Mr. Halick is survived by a son, Michael Glenn Halick of Freehold Township; a daughter and son-in-law, Patricia and John Tirpak of Lanoka Harbor; two sisters, Mary Casey of Wrightstown, and Ann Scheck of Summit; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Sandra Webb
Sandra Webb, 67, of Manalapan, died April 8, 2007, at home. Born in Neptune, she had resided in Freehold before moving to Manalapan 32 years ago. Mrs. Webb was an executive secretary to the Monmouth County Finance Director, Freehold, before her retirement. She was a communicant of St. Rose of Lima Roman Catholic Church, Freehold. She was predeceased by her husband, Joseph Webb, in 1996. Surviving are a son, James M. Webb of Pennsylvania; a daughter and son-in-law, Patricia and Walter Scharff of Jackson; three brothers, Harry Narozniak of Monroe, Thomas Narozniak of Beachwood, and Richard Narozniak of Virginia; three sisters, Frances Keimig of Freehold, Rosemarie Biddle of Manalapan, and Patricia Wall of Virginia; and three grandchildren. A funeral liturgy was celebrated at St. Rose of Lima Church, followed by interment at St. Rose of Lima Cemetery, Freehold Township.
