Scholarship for African- American students
The Garden State Association of Black Journalists, an affiliate chapter of the National Association of Black Journalists, will award a number of $1,500 scholarships to African American students planning a career in journalism or mass communications. Rules and eligibility include: + The competition is open to any African-American high school senior who resides in and attends school in New Jersey. + The student must have a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 2.8 (B-), and plan to attend college during the 2007-08 school year; submit an official transcript, and demonstrate an interest in pursuing a career in journalism. + Applicants must submit a letter of nomination from their school adviser, dean or teacher familiar with their work. Nominations must be postmarked by April 27, 2007. + In addition to the nominating letter, applicants must submit a 500-word essay explaining career goals and journalistic activities, i.e., work on school publications, internships, writing awards. + Materials will be judged on the basis of writing ability, originality and potential to succeed in a journalism career. All materials must be typed and double-spaced. Materials will not be returned. All application materials must be postmarked by April 27, 2007. Incomplete or late applications are automatically disqualified. Winners will be notified by June 5, 2007. Grants will be awarded once GSABJ has received proof of enrollment for the 2007-08 academic year.
