Accident results in charges BY KATHY BARATTA Staff Writer
MANALAPAN - Two summonses have been issued to a 94-year-old Manal-apan resident whose Route 9 collision with another vehicle on March 11 occurred as he was driving north in the southbound lanes of the state highway.
Police said Abe Goldenberg has been charged with driving the wrong way on a one-way street and with careless driving. Both charges carry penalties of fines ranging between $50 and $200 and imprisonment not to exceed 15 days.
Capt. Lou Moreto told the News Tran-script this week that police are still not certain where on Route 9 Goldenberg entered the highway or how long he had been traveling north in the southbound lanes.
Police Chief Stuart Brown said his department will ask state motor vehicle officials to have Goldenberg submit to a driver's re-examination and to a medical examination in order to determine if he should retain his driving privileges.
The charges lodged against Golden-berg followed a motor vehicle collision on Route 9 at Pine Brook Road that shut down the highway for four hours on March 11 when Goldenberg's 2005 Cadillac CTS, which was traveling north in the southbound lanes of Route 9, collided at 12:14 p.m. with a 1998 Honda Accord that was being driven by Leatrice Tembrevilla, 74, of Manalapan.
Police reported that Tembrevilla's vehicle was in the left southbound lane of Route 9 south when it was struck by Goldenberg's vehicle, which was traveling north.
Tembrevilla had to be extricated from her vehicle. She was flown to Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Nep-tune, by helicopter.
Police could only say last week that she is in rehabilitation.
Goldenberg was transported to Jersey Shore University Medical Center and has since returned home.
Route 9 south was closed from 12:15 p.m. to 4 p.m. between Union Hill and Gordons Corner roads. Backups on Route 9 south were reported to have reached Texas Road at the border of Old Bridge and Marlboro.
