Youngster runs clothing drive

MARLBORO - Harrah Newman is described by her father as someone who always wants to help others in need.

That description is right on the money for the youngster who started a clothing drive at her elementary school this year.

Harrah, 10, a fifth-grader at the Robertsville Elementary School, organized a clothing drive she called "Clean Your Closets." The drive began in January when fifth-graders were asked to donate clothes that were no longer needed.

From January through May, each grade will have boxes placed in Robertsville classrooms and the pupils are being asked to help Harrah collect clothing to donate to the American Red Cross.

Harrah said she decided to organize the charity donation because she enjoys helping people who are in need. She chose the American Red Cross because it is an organization that helps people around the world.

David Newman, Harrah's father, said his daughter has always been generous and has had other charitable ideas in the past. He said Harrah donates part of her allowance to charity on a regular basis.

Newman said his daughter is inspired by her family, which has adopted other families during the holidays and bought them presents.

"She has a really big heart. In school if there is a kid who is a little bit different, Harrah is the first to say hello to them," Newman said. "I think it is great that she cares enough to do something about it and I'm sure this isn't a one-time shot for her."
