Team aids victims of violence

MARLBORO - The police department, in conjunction with 180 Turning Lives Around, has specially trained volunteer advocates who are available to meet confidentially with victims of domestic violence at police headquarters 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The advocates of the Domestic Violence Response Team (DVRT) work in conjunction with the police to provide support, information, referrals and a safety plan to victims at their time of crisis. The advocates also discuss with the victim their legal rights in regard to obtaining a temporary restraining order.

The volunteer advocates, who must complete a mandatory 40-hour DVRT certification training, are civilian members of the community.

Anyone who is a victim of domestic violence may stop by Marlboro police headquarters, 1979 Township Drive (off Wyncrest Road in the Marlboro municipal complex), at any time and ask to speak with a domestic violence victim advocate. In an emergency, dial 911.

For 30 years, 180 Turning Lives Around, a private nonprofit organization, has been dedicated to providing shelter, counseling, protection, support, prevention, education and advocacy for residents of Monmouth County who are affected by domestic violence and sexual assault.

Anyone who is a victim of domestic violence may call the 180 confidential domestic violence hot line at (732) 264-4111, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. In an emergency, dial 911.
