Costco due at Planning Board

MARLBORO - Representatives of Costco Wholesale are expected to appear before the Planning Board on Feb. 21.

Representatives of Costco, a membership shopping club, will seek site plan approval to build a 145,267-square-foot facility in the Regal Cinemas Plaza on Route 9 north near Texas Road.

A public hearing on the Costco application was scheduled for Dec. 20, but the meeting was canceled that evening when the board did not have a quorum.

The applicant is proposing to knock down the Regal Cinemas and build a Costco facility in the shopping center on Route 9.

The site is in a C-4 commercial district; however, a small portion of the property is in Old Bridge.

The Planning Board clerk said the applicant will have to get approval from Old Bridge if the plan is approved by the Marlboro Planning Board.

According to a legal notice for the application that was published in a local daily newspaper prior to the Dec. 20 meeting, the applicant is also proposing to construct a gas station on the site.

The variances being requested by the applicant are for the size of the parking spaces, the distance of some of the parking spaces from the building and for a sign on the building.

The attorney representing Costco is Salvatore Alfieri, of the firm Cleary, Alfieri, Jones and Hoyle, of Matawan.
