Pupils enjoy Japanese culture

FREEHOLD TOWNSHIP - Third-grade pupils at the Marshall W. Errickson School celebrated Japan Day on Jan. 26 as a culminating activity to follow their study of Japanese culture and customs.

During the day, pupils dressed in kimonos for a traditional Japanese tea ceremony. They also took part in activities to learn to speak the language and use their creative talents to design Japanese booklets, fans, lanterns and carp kites.

According to information provided by the Freehold Township School District, the event was held after third-graders researched and studied several aspects of Japanese life. According to teachers, pupils became familiar with Japanese tradition and were eager to learn about the similarities and differences between American customs and those in Japan.

Teachers believed Japan Day was a fun activity to tie everything together.

"Students really look forward to this event and are excited to be part of different cultural activities," said third grade teacher Victoria Neron. "The event has proven to be an excellent way to offer multicultural experiences within the classroom."

Third-grader Harlie Kneler was dressed in an original kimono that her mother made for her. Throughout the event, she and her friends were enthusiastically involved in each activity.

"This is fun and authentic," Harlie said. "I learned a lot and enjoy making these things in class."
