A bus trip to the Showboat Hotel and Casino, Atlantic City, is scheduled for March 4. All proceeds from the bus trip will benefit Andrea Adams. Andrea Adams is a local resident who was stricken with meningococcemia, a bacterial infection of unknown causes. During treatment, Andrea suffered cardiac arrest and remained in a coma for two months. She was hospitalized for seven months. The end result left Andrea legally blind, with conceptual difficulties, slurred speech patterns, limited functional use of her hands, and confined to a wheelchair. The bus will depart from Michael J. Tighe Park, Freehold Township on March 4 at 1 p.m., and will depart Atlantic City at 8:30 p.m. for the return trip. The cost of the trip includes: round-trip charter bus transportation; food and drinks served on the bus; $22 in coins and a $5 food coupon; and raffles and prizes. "Conservation's Power" is the theme for the 2007 poster contest sponsored by the Freehold Soil Conservation District and the New Jersey Association of Conservation Districts. Students are encouraged to explore conservation practices in their community - in homes, schools, farms, parks, etc., that save energy or help to create alternative or renewable energy resources. The contest is open to all students in grades two through 12 in Middlesex and Monmouth counties. Local level prizes include $100, $75 and $50 U.S. Savings Bonds. All first-place winners are submitted for state level competition where one grand champion poster will be selected and reproduced onto a pocket folder and distributed statewide. The Monmouth County Historical Association announced that it has recently received a $2,670 grant from the New Jersey Council for the Humanities, a state partner of the National Endowment for the Humanities. The grant will fund the printing of a teaching tool to promote the use of primary sources in coursework at the high school level. "Documents in the Classroom: The World War II Home Front in New Jersey" was developed with the help of volunteer Janice Campbell of Lincroft, a former high school history teacher. The booklets will contain facsimiles of documents from the association's collections along with a document analysis worksheet and a brief historical context for the items. Three Monmouth County schools have agreed to use the booklets in their classes this spring: the Collier School in Marlboro, Middletown High School North and Middletown High School South. 'Once Upon a Time' gift auction to benefit school Land O' Pines Elementary School, Howell, will host a "Once Upon a Time" gift auction and dinner March 2 at the Excelsior in Manalapan. The event will include a dinner, gift auction and 50/50 raffle to benefit the children of Land O'Pines school. Doors will open at 6 p.m.. Tickets are $40 each and include one ticket sheet for level-one prizes. Prizes include barbecue grill, golf outing for four, sports memorabilia, spa day, $1,000 gift card, trips and more. Here's the chance to awaken your child's interest in music with an introduction to rhythm, tempo, pitch and other musical dynamics. The Monmouth County Park System invites parents and their youngsters age 2-4 to "Let's Explore Music," a fun-filled educational program featuring both voice and instruments. This new music program will meet once a week for six, 45-minute sessions during February and March (depending on the session) at the following park system locations: + Dorbrook Activity Center, Route 537, Colts Neck + Henry Hudson Trail Activity Center, Route 36, Leonardo + Manasquan Reservoir Visitor Center, Windeler Road, Howell. Morning and afternoon sessions are available; the cost is $90 per parent/child pair (sibling rate available). Women's American Organization for Educational Resources Through Training (ORT) is planning two spring trips. A trip scheduled for April 19 will begin with lunch at the Grapevine Restaurant and Lounge in Tuckerton, followed by a night of entertainment at Atlantic City casinos. The trip cost is $48 and is due by Feb. 13. The second trip, scheduled for June 10, is a trip to Cape Cod, Mass., and the Islands for five days, and four nights, which includes breakfast and dinner each morning and every evening. The return trip includes a stop at the Mohegan Sun casino in Connecticut. The trip cost is $540, double occupancy (single occupancy, additional $95). A deposit of $220 is due by March 26. Resident to speak about experience in Guatemala
The Freehold Area Branch of the American Association of University Women will meet Feb. 8 and will hear about the adventure of one of its members in Central America. Sue Richman of Freehold Township will relate her experience as a translator on a two-week trip to Guatemala with a team of volunteer doctors and nurses. Richman teaches English as a Second Language in Freehold. She volunteers at the Parker Family Clinic in Red Bank, where she heard about the San Francisco-based Hospital de la Familia Foundation, which rotates eight American surgical teams to Guatemala every three months. The Feb. 8 program begins at 8 p.m. at the Barkalow Middle School, Stillwells Corner Road, Freehold Township. Guests are welcome, and dessert and coffee will be served.
