Community Bulletin Board The Committee on Conscience, N.J. chapter, is sponsoring a book talk and signing of "Darfur Diaries: Stories of Survival." The book documents the stories of individual Darfuris struggling to survive amid crisis and tragedy. It demonstrates the strength of the human spirit, both of the Darfuri people and the three young authors/filmmakers who went to the region to document their stories. This event, which will be held 5-7 p.m. Jan. 28 at Barnes & Noble, Brunswick Square Mall, East Brunswick, will be followed by a 7 p.m. screening of "Darfur Diaries: Message From Home," in the mall's movie theater, Mega Movies. Girl Scouts planning to honor six women
Six women whose professional, business and community leadership contribute greatly to the quality of life in Monmouth and Ocean counties have been named to receive the 2007 Women of Distinction award given annually by the Monmouth Council of Girl Scouts. The honorees include Suzanne Citron, founder of the Charles Lafitte Foun-dation, of Brielle; Doris Crocker, executive director of New Jersey Haiti Partners of the Americas, of Tinton Falls; Diane Gooch, co-owner and publisher of the Two River Times, of Rumson; Marie Muhler, former Monmouth County surrogate, of Sea Girt; Denise Stavola, civic volunteer, of Middletown; and Luann Stavola, civic volunteer, of Middletown. The women will receive the awards at the 20th annual Women of Distinction Dinner to be held at Jumping Brook Country Club, Neptune, on March 15. "We honor these six women for their outstanding contributions at work and in the community. Every day they are out in the field paving the way and making a difference in the world for future generations. Positive role models empower the girls of today to become the leaders of tomorrow," said Susan H. McClure, chief executive officer of the Monmouth Council of Girl Scouts.
Parents may sign up preschoolers for classes
The Freehold Township School District's Early Childhood Learning Center, 510 Stillwells Corner Road, is offering two half-day sessions during the 2007-08 school year for approximately 20 preschool children. Preference is given first to those who qualify as economically disadvantaged, and then to those chosen through a lottery. To be eligible, children must be 4 years old on or before Oct. 1, 2007, documented by an original birth certificate, and have two proofs of residency. Students must have all immunizations including four doses of DTaP, three doses of Polio, MMR, HIB vaccine and one dose of Varicella vaccine or a history of chicken pox. A current physical examination must also be reported on Form N107 and signed by the physician. Anyone interested in having their child attend one of these half-day sessions is asked to call (732) 866-6858, ext. 8700 to request a registration packet and application by Feb. 28. JCC to sponsor 'Game Afternoon' for singles
The Jewish Community Center of Western Monmouth County is sponsoring a "Game Afternoon" for Jewish singles, age 55 and older, at the Jewish Community Center of Western Mon-mouth, Galleria shopping plaza, 100 Route 9 north, Manalapan. The event will be held Jan. 28 from 2-4 p.m. There will be card games, sports trivia, Trivial Pursuit, or participants can bring their own game. Light refreshments will be served. The Manalapan Police Department received a $22,600 grant for the Manalapan Commuter Safety Program. The areas targeted for the Commuter Safety Program will be along Route 9 north and south in the vicinity of the commuter parking lots and designated crosswalks. The program is designed to change people's habits to "cross at the green and not in between." The goal of this grant is to exceed the statewide average of 20 percent reduction in pedestrian-involved accidents after the first year of the program, which is being coordinated locally by Police Lt. The Rotary Club of Freehold will host its first Super Bowl Extravaganza on Super Bowl Sunday, Feb. 4, at the Court Jester, 16 E. Main St., Freehold, from 5 p.m. until one hour after the game. There will be appetizers, a gourmet buffet at halftime, drinks and door prizes. All proceeds from the event will be donated to the Semper Fi Fund for wounded combat Marines and their families. FHS Hall of Fame will induct new members
The Freehold High School Hall of Fame has announced the honorees who will be recognized at the induction ceremony at 6 p.m. March 29 at Freehold Gardens, Freehold Township. The outstanding alumni are: opera singer Juanita Baskerville, class of 1947; actor/singer David Garrison, class of 1970; computer architect/designer/developer Brian Hou, class of 1984; journalist Richard J.H. Johnston, class of 1934; artist Jim Gary, class of 1961; businessmen Joseph Laird, class of 1920, and John Evans Laird, class of 1922; businessman Joseph Saker, class of 1956; and journalist/author Keith Brown, class of 1978. Also to be honored at the ceremony are inductees into the Quarter Century Club, staff members who have worked 25 or more years at Freehold High School. This year's honorees are Joseph Reilly, Jack DeValue, Margaret Farrell, Joyce Bowen, Ronald Bright, Sylvia Holmes, Jack Kuhnert, Cal Dean Wilson, Pearle Button, Hattie Tyler, Peggy Mackevich, Carol Lifland and Richard Lyster. Wemrock Brook school teachers receive grants
Two teachers from the Wemrock Brook Elementary School, Manalapan, were among 15 teachers from across New Jersey to be awarded math, science and technology grants by Jersey Central Power and Light. The grants of up to $500 are awarded each year for creative hands-on projects, according to a press release. Kate Reilly received a grant to support the Young Astronauts project for grades five and six; Denise Riccio's grant supports grade five students in Manag-ing Behavior Through Check Books.
