Survivors’ stories retold

MANALAPAN — The Monmouth County Library Headquarters, Symmes Drive, will host an exhibit that further honors survivors of the World War II era Holocaust.

Beginning Jan. 7 the library will host “Survival of the Human Spirit: Triumph Over Adversity.”

A reception will begin at 1:30 p.m. At 2 p.m. a presentation by Seymour Siegler will officially open the event.

Siegler is a director and co-founder of The Center for Holocaust Studies at Brookdale Community College, Lin-croft.

Featured as part of the exhibit is “To Tomorrow’s Children, Words of Survi-vors.”

According to a press release, The Center for Holocaust Studies has brought together a group of Holocaust survivors who work closely with the center, sharing their stories with students in the hope that telling their stories will help to eliminate hate.

“As time marches on, we are faced with the reality that future generations will not be able to meet Holocaust survivors and hear their stories firsthand. We asked these survivors to provide a story from their Holocaust lives accompanied by their message to tomorrow’s children, a legacy they wish to be remembered and taught,” the press release states.

The exhibit’s photographs and the stories shared by the survivors will become part of a permanent exhibit that will be housed in The Center for Holocaust Studies and used on a continuing basis as a traveling exhibit for schools.

These survivors and their stories will remain the foundation for the studies of the Holocaust that will continue at Brookdale. According to the press release, each story will be the basis of a lesson plan that will have the individual survivor at its core, using his or her particular experience as the focus of study.
