New fields to debut in 2008

JOE FERDINANDO New baseball fields have been constructed at the Freehold Township Little League complex in Michael J. Tighe Park, Freehold Township. The fields will be ready for play in the spring of 2008.
FREEHOLD TOWNSHIP — Con-struction work has been largely completed on four new playing fields at the Freehold Township Little League complex in Michael J. Tighe Park, Georgia Road.

While the fields may look as if they are ready for play today, they will not see any action until the spring of 2008, according to Sue McGough, superintendent of parks and recreation.

The project was completed by Precise Construction, of Howell, which will return in the spring to complete final details on the fields, McGough said. She praised the effort of Tony Vlahos, the owner of the firm, who, she said, was on site 90 percent of the time and promptly addressed any construction issue that arose.

The new fields will sit unused for a year to allow the grass to knit and will be ready for play in 2008.

McGough said the township invested slightly more than $2 million to create four new fields: a tournament Little League baseball field (60-foot bases); a tournament Senior League baseball field (90-foot bases); a multipurpose field for baseball and softball with a skin infield; a tournament softball field (60-foot bases).

The township paid for the construction of the fields and the Freehold Township Little League will fund amenities such as bleachers and meeting space in the Little League portion of the park, McGough said.
