Federation plans fundraiser

The Jewish Federation of Greater Monmouth County will present its largest fundraising event of the year, the Super Sunday phonathon, Nov. 19 from 9 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Ruth Hyman Jewish Community Center, Deal. The event is co-chaired this year by Dr. Jonathon Barofsky of Ocean Township and Abby Kramsky of Marlboro.

According to a press release, more than 200 community members gather throughout the day to raise funds from constituents all over Monmouth County. Each year, volunteers make more than 3,000 phone calls on Super Sunday. Last year, the federation raised more than $300,000 for its annual campaign on Super Sunday alone.

The Jewish Federation annual campaign funds Jewish Family and Children's Services, which provides family counseling, elder care, Meals on Wheels and adoption services for Jews and non-Jews alike.

It helps to provide scholarships for three Jewish day schools and services to afternoon Hebrew schools.

The campaign raises funds to support the Jewish Community Center of Mon-mouth County and the JCC of Western Monmouth County, both of which provide services to seniors, singles and young people.

Also locally, the Holocaust Center at Brookdale Community College and the Hillel at Rutgers University benefit from the annual campaign.

Through its overseas partners, the Jewish Agency for Israel and the Joint Distribution Committee, the federation helps to rescue and rehabilitate those in need across the globe, Jews and non-Jews.

The federation represents a North American network that has also responded to crises, including the tsunami in South Asia, hurricanes Katrina and Rita, and the war in Israel, where it helped to move Jews, Arabs and Druze children from the embattled north to safety in Israel's center.
