Pupils shine at annual math event Christian Brothers Academy, Lincroft, held the Brother Christian Jones Eighth Grade Mathematics Contest on Oct. 21. This was the 35th annual math contest, and only the second year that the contest was named for Jones, chair emeritus of the mathematics department at CBA, and the founder and long-time host of the event. Patrick Melosh, chair of CBA's Math Department, hosted the event. The contest, which involves eighth grade students competing for awards in basic mathematics and algebra based questions, featured 46 schools and approximately 350 students. A complete team is eight students who are competing for individual and team awards in two divisions, one for private and one for public schools. Team awards were won by: Public School Division, 1st, Marlboro Memorial Middle School; 2nd, Marlboro Middle School; 3rd, William R. Satz School, Holmdel; 4th, Cranbury School; 5th, Manalapan-Englishtown Middle School; 6th, Tenafly Middle School; 7th, Forrestdale School, Rumson; 8th, Thompson Middle School, Middletown; 9th, Thomas Jefferson Middle School, Fair Lawn; and 10th, Millstone Middle School. In the Private School Division, 1st, The Ranney School, Tinton Falls; 2nd, Oak Hill Academy, Lincroft; 3rd, St. Dominic School, Brick; 4th, Solomon Schechter Day School, Marlboro; 5th, St. Catharine School, Spring Lake; 6th, St. Ambrose School, Old Bridge; 7th, St. Leo the Great School, Lincroft; 8th, St. Aloysius School, Jackson; 9th, St. Veronica School, Howell; 10th, Monmouth Academy, Howell. In the Public School Division, individual awards were presented to: 1st, Vinay Ayyala (Marlboro Memorial) and Matthew Colen (Marlboro Memorial); 3rd, Shameek Gayen (Marlboro Middle); 4th, Janie Gu (Marlboro Memorial); 5th, Nathaniel May (Marlboro Middle); 6th, Stephanie Yang (Satz); 7th, Manik Bhatia (Cranbury); 8th, Krystyn Suppa (Manalapan-Englishtown); 9th, Jenny Nam (Tenafly); 10th, Brittany Reynoso (Millstone). Private School Division award winners are: 1st, Eric Schneider (Ranney); 2nd, Brittany Gau (Oak Hill); 3rd, Sidney Buchbinder (Solomon Schechter); 4th, Rachel McEnroe (Oak Hill); 5th, Andrew Casten (St. Dominic); 6th, Elliot Chester (Monmouth Academy); 7th, Alexander Zangari (St. Dominic); 8th, Alexander Breton (Ranney); 9th, Nathan Buchbinder (Solomon Schechter); and 10th, Sarah Newbury (Chesterbrook Academy).
