Obituaries Francis Michael Mulligan Mr. Mulligan, 84, of Wilsonville, Ore., died Oct. 10, 2006, at Providence St. Vincent Medical Center, Portland, Ore. He was born in Freehold and resided there before joining the U.S. Army during World War II. He moved to Oakland, Calif., in 1960 and to Wilsonville in 2002. He served as a paratrooper in the 101st Airborne Division, 194th Infantry, Company E during World War II. Mr. Mulligan attended Fordham University, New York City, and was a member of the American Legion Post and the Elks Lodge of Wilsonville. He was predeceased by two brothers, John and Charles Mulligan. Surviving are his wife, Norma Joan Hansen Mulligan; a daughter and son-in-law, Marie and John Crescenzo of Brick; two grandchildren; a sister, Ann Lunney of Seattle; and many nieces and nephews. A funeral liturgy was celebrated at St. Rose of Lima Roman Catholic Church, Freehold, followed by interment at St. Rose of Lima Cemetery, Freehold Township. The Higgins Memorial Home, Freehold, was in charge of arrangements. Raymond C. Collins Mr. Collins, 84, of Freehold, died Oct. 12, 2006, at home. Born in Freehold, he was a lifelong resident. Before his retirement, Mr. Collins was superintendent of buildings and grounds for the County of Monmouth. He was also employed at the former A&M Karagheusian rug mill, Freehold, and the Monmouth County Sheriff's Office. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds received at the Battle of the Bulge. He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Freehold. He was a former captain of Richardson Engine Company No. 2 of the Freehold Fire Department, where he served as a member from 1953 to 1968; a member of the Freehold Exempt Firemen's Association; and a former member of the Fur, Fin and Feather Club, Freehold Township. Mr. Collins was predeceased by his wife, Sarah I. Collins, in 2005. He is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Gary R. and Kathleen Collins of Barnegat, and Kenneth G. and Judy Collins of Harrisburg, Pa.; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Services were held at the Higgins Memorial Home, Freehold followed by interment at Maplewood Cemetery, Freehold Township.
Marilyn Rhoades Herman Mrs. Herman, of Freehold, died Oct. 16, 2006, at Bayshore Community Hospital, Holmdel. Born in Freehold, she was a lifelong resident. She was the daughter of the late Lillian Saker Rhoades and William E. Rhoades. She attended St. Rose of Lima Grammar School, Freehold, and graduated from Freehold High School in 1953. Mrs. Herman was a telephone operator with New Jersey Bell for 10 years, and later worked for the Monmouth County Park System as a communications operator in Lincroft for 22 years, retiring in 1996. She was a communicant of St. Rose of Lima Roman Catholic Church, Freehold, where she was a member of the Rosary Altar Society. Surviving are her two daughters, Cheryl A. Herman and Lisa A. Herman, and a son and daughter-in-law, Joseph W. and Nicole Herman, all of Freehold; two sisters, Audrey Rhoades Matallana of Cali, Columbia, South America, and Jean Ann Rhoades Leopardi of Freehold; a grandson; and several nieces and nephews. The funeral liturgy was celebrated at St. Rose of Lima Church, followed by interment at St. Rose of Lima Cemetery, Freehold Township. Doris Bearmore Bathgate Mrs. Bathgate, 89, died Sept. 8 at Kimball Medical Center, Lakewood. Born in the Adelphia section of Howell Township, on April 18, 1917, she was the daughter of Addie Southard Bearmore and Millard Fillmore Bearmore. She had lived in Howell for 69 years before moving to Lakewood 20 years ago. She was a member and former president of the Howell Township PTA; a former Howell Republican committeewoman; and a member of Bethesda Methodist Church, Adelphia. She also held various volunteer positions within the community, which included working Thursday afternoon bingo at Leisure Village and volunteering at the Paul Kimball thrift shop at Kimball Medical Center. In addition, she was a member of the Italian-American Club at Leisure Village. Mrs. Bathgate was predeceased by her husband, Lawrence "Bill" E. Bathgate in 1968, as well as a brother, Stacy Bearmore, and two sisters, Vivian Bearmore and Marie Bearmore Korski. Surviving are two sons and a daughter-in-law, Lawrence E. Bathgate II of Bay Head, and Colin Lee and Tyonja Bathgate of Frederick, Md.; a daughter and son-in-law, Pamela Doris and Mark Husik of Bayville; two sisters-in-law, Marion Bearmore of Brick and Vera Bathgate Marquardt of Freehold; 10 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and many friends and extended family members. A funeral service was held at the Clayton & McGirr Funeral Home, Freehold Township, followed by interment at Adelphia Cemetery, Adelphia. Alphonse "Funzi" Santarpia Mr. Santarpia, 82, of Marlboro, died Oct. 19, 2006, at CentraState Medical Center, Freehold Township. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., he had lived there before moving to Marlboro Greens eight years ago. Prior to retiring in 1989, Mr. Santarpia was a supervisor for the New York City Department of Sanitation. A U.S. Army veteran, he served during World War II. He was a communicant of St. Thomas More Roman Catholic Church, Manalapan. Surviving are his wife of 54 years, Helen; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Rose Ann Santarpia of Marlboro, and Rochelle and John Bonfiglio, and Toni Ann and Victor Sparano, all of Manalapan; and five grandchildren. A funeral liturgy was offered at St. Thomas More Roman Catholic Church, followed by interment at Brig. Gen. William C. Doyle Veterans Cemetery, Arnytown. Freeman Manalapan-Marlboro Funeral Home, Manalapan, was in charge of arrangements.
Edward F. Sause Mr. Sause, 81, of Little Silver, died Oct. 8, 2006, at Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank. Born in Bayonne, he resided in Little Silver the past 50 years. He was a self-employed financial investor in the Little Silver area. Prior to that, he was a general manager at Otis Elevator. He served with the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. An avid runner, he earned a bronze medal in the Melrose Games. He enjoyed the race track, and at one time was a breeder and horse owner. He is survived by his wife, Mary Marmora Sause; three daughters, Ronnie Lower of Little Silver, and Barbara and Susan Sause, both of Colts Neck; two granddaughters; and four great-grandchildren. A Mas of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. James Roman Catholic Church, Red Bank. Interment was at Fair View Cemetery, Middletown. Arrangements were by Fiore Funeral Home, West Long Branch. Mary Agnes Hopkins Mrs. Hopkins, 80, of Colts Neck, died Sept. 28, 2006, at Meridian's Colts Neck Village assisted living community. Born in Walpole, Mass., she had lived in Wheeling, Ill., before moving to Colts Neck Village in 2003. Prior to retiring in 1989, she was a registered nurse for Brentwood Nursing Home in Lincolnshire, Ill. She was also a volunteer for many years for the Meals on Wheels program. Mrs. Hopkins was predeceased in 2003 by her husband, Myhill "Bill" Hopkins. Surviving are three sons and two daughters-in-law, William Hopkins of Hoboken, Paul and Jane Hopkins of Joliet, Ill., and Timothy and Deborah Hopkins of Amboy, Ill.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Kathleen "Cappy" and Scott Linn of Manalapan, and Julianne and David Moore of San Francisco; a sister, Catherine Flaherty of Walpole, Ill.; nine grandchildren; and two nieces. Interment was private, with Freeman Manalapan-Marlboro Funeral Home, Manalapan, in charge of arrangements. Ferdinand F. Olszewski Mr. Olszewski, 89, of Englishtown, died Sept. 28, 2006, at home. Born in South River, he had resided there before moving to Englishtown in 1976. Prior to retiring, he was the owner of the Lawrence Brook Delicatessen in South River for 10 years, and had previously been a liquor salesman for Trenton Beverage for 20 years. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was a communicant of St. Mary of Ostrabrama Roman Catholic Church, South River. Mr. Olszewski was predeceased by his wife, Ruth Olszewski, in 2003, and a sister, Janina Wiechoski. Surviving are a son, Stephen Olszewski of Englishtown, and a daughter, Karen Thorne of Mansfield. Funeral services were held at Maliszewski Funeral Home, South River, followed by a Mass at St. Mary of Ostrabrama Church. Burial took place at St. Mary's Cemetery, East Brunswick.
Christina M. Fetto Mrs. Fetto, 78, of Manalapan, died Sept. 28, 2006, at Bartley Healthcare Nursing & Rehabilitation, Jackson. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., she had lived in Staten Island, N.Y., for 35 years before moving to Manalapan in 1999. Prior to her retirement in 1996, she was a butcher for Pathmark, Staten Island, for 25 years. Mrs. Fetto was predeceased by her husband, John Fiore Fetto, in 1979. Surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, John and Yolanda Fetto of Manahawkin, and Robert and Loriann Fetto of Manalapan; a brother, Donato Macchia of Brooklyn; two sisters, Marie Tarentino of Medford, N.Y., and Jennifer Toto of Brooklyn; and four grandchildren. A funeral liturgy was offered at St. Thomas More Roman Catholic Church, Manalapan, followed by interment at Brooklyn's Green-Wood Cemetery. Freeman Manalapan-Marlboro Funeral Home, Manalapan, was in charge of arrangements.
Helen Maria Davis Mrs. Davis, 58, of Freehold Township, died Sept. 25, 2006, at CentraState Medical Center, Freehold Township. She was born and raised in Perth Amboy. Mrs. Davis was a team leader and insurance adjuster for Proformance Insurance, Freehold. She previously worked for the Hanover Insurance Co., Sayreville, for 17 years, and also worked for Liberty Mutual Insurance Co. She also was the owner of Inches Off Salon for several years. Mrs. Davis was predeceased by her husband, Thomas Richard Davis; her parents, Maddalena and Victor Kurtas; and a nephew. She is survived by a daughter, Jennifer Janice Davis, at home; a sister and brother-in-law, Lucy and Gary Shamy of Woodbridge; a brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Paula Kurtas of Hillsborough; a sister-in-law and her husband, Janice and Frank S. Gaudio of Atlantic Highlands; a brother-in-law and his wife, Joseph W. Jr. and Barbara C. Davis of Silver Springs, Md.; many nieces and nephews; and her companion, Thomas J. DeVito Sr. of Freehold Township. A funeral Mass was offered at St. Robert Bellarmine Roman Catholic Church, Freehold Township, followed by interment at Clover Leaf Memorial Park, Woodbridge. The Clayton & McGirr Funeral Home, Freehold Township, was in charge of arrangements.
