Republican freeholders appear to be serving themselves One party rule, whether at the national, state or local level does not work. That has become more evident than ever in this election season. Power breeds corruption. This axiom has proven itself relevant in Congress, whether in reference to Jack Abramoff, Mark Foley, or countless other scandals. Here in Monmouth County we are no strangers to the dangers of one party rule, yet year after year we keep giving Republican freeholders a free pass. I just don't get it. What, exactly, have they done for us? This year it's questionable payments to county attorneys, all at taxpayer expense. In short, after promising to reduce county legal costs, the current Board of Freeholders has actually overseen an increase in costs. After a five-month study, the board chose to rehire the same firm that has been doing business with the county for 20 years. This same firm, in 2005 alone, contributed upward of $27,000 to local GOP candidates. While the current freeholders talk reform, they keep on doing exactly what they've been doing for 20 years of one party rule. [One] article quoted Freeholder Lillian Burry as defending her vote to keep Malcolm Carton's law firm on the county payroll for the sake of "continuity." The article also pointed out that she, as well as other members of the freeholder board, have been the recipients of substantial campaign contributions from associates of this legal firm. Continuity is the last thing we need. It is time for a change in Monmouth County. Our current public servants seem a lot more concerned with serving themselves than the residents of Monmouth County.
